COLOMBIA V URUGUAY

Guest referee: Michael Baggs — Editor, Gigwise

Colombia32 Theme tune to Pasion de Gavilanes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TT8A–6Qps

“Like a Las Ketchup end of album ballad, the theme tune to Columbia's Passion Of Hawks is an aching slow burner, brimming with emotion and capturing the insatiable lust of living in places where men wear sleeveless shirts, ladies loiter near bullocks in non-ironic chaps and everyone is at it in the barn. It is also, for a soap opera theme tune, REALLY LONG. The lead vocalist pushes her talent to its limit, taking the much-studied Halliwell approach to her profession, and whether she is close to missing notes at the top or bottom of her range, pushes on regardless. Fortunately, the uplifting and generous use of the accordion throughout the theme compensates for any vocal wobbles. Sadly, the sheer length of these credits (thought Game Of Thrones opening credits was a bit too long? That's nothing) ultimately makes shots of topless men dousing themselves in water and stern but handsome ladies stood cross-armed outside their properties seem somewhat yawnsome — like dealing with a four-hour boner from a dodgy sex pill given to you by a bloke down the gym.”

Uruguay32 Theme tune to Las Novias de Travolta

“In 2013, Daft Punk released their long-awaited 'Random Access Memories' album. The album sold in its millions, despite the overwhelming opinion that a lot of the album was really quite poor. This is exactly what the record needed. Retro, empowering and packed with 70s and 80s musical references, shoehorn a Pharrell Williams top-line onto this and a second hit single from the album would have been in the bag. A trumpet-led tune, the opening credits to Brides Of Travolta (amazing) breaks into a squealing, guitar led monster at its mid point. This frantic theme is perfectly complimented by its explosive, disco visuals of silhouetted ladies in flared trousers spinning and thrusting, showing their men exactly what larks they are missing out on. Colombia have sex on their side, but in this instance, it's in the bag for Uruguay."

Michael's full time score:

Colombia 1 — Uruguay 4
