No Bueno oh no no Nadia vide-Oh

  • August 2, 2011
  • Popjustice

Nadia Oh is quite confusing.

She makes music, like the audacious, Twenty Quid Music Prize-nominated 'Taking Over The Dancefloor' ("loud and trashy and horrible but I love it" sums things up pretty well), and she makes videos, and there's cover art to go with it all, and you can buy the music on, for example, iTunes. These things all happen in the way things usually happen in pop, but it feels as if they are disconnected from the rest of the world of music. If someone told you tomorrow that Nadia Oh didn't actually exist, and that the whole thing had been done with computers, there wouldn't be much you could do to prove otherwise. It's like she's forgotten to join the dots between her 'art' and the point where people might actually buy it; as if she forgets to tell anyone she's done anything, or wants to keep it secret, or can't get the time off work to do the whole thing properly. We can't tell whether it's incompetence or a fantastic exploration of how independent pop artists can set their own agenda.

Anyway there's now a video for former Song Of The Day 'No Bueno'. Is it a single? Why's the video only a minute and a half long? Has it failed at looking amazing or succeeded at looking super-stylised? Is there anything in this clip to offer solid proof that Nadia Oh is not computer generated? Just a few of the many issues thrown up by this thought provoking series of moving images.

THIS IS ALL TOO MUCH.
