Future pop singles and their potential hit factor: Part 1

  • March 28, 2007
  • Popjustice

Over the next few months a lot of songs are going to be released in one format or another.

Here are a list of the Popjustice-relevant releases and a few lines on how they may or may not fare on the pop charts.

Your guide is pretend pop psychic Millie Jackson, that woman from the 'Hilarious Album Covers' email that arrives in your inbox every two weeks.

Natasha Bedingfield
'I Wanna Have Your Babies'

This will be a Top Ten single because it is what it is. The single will do well. Does the world need a second Natasha Bedingfield album? The choice is in the ever reliable hands of the British public.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number four.

Christina Aguilera
'Candyman'

Like gravy splashed up her legs to hide the fact that tights are rationed, Aguilera's enormous video and photography budget is hiding the fact that there is not one good song on her current album.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number eight.

Stefy
'Chelsea'

Now that the buzz has built nicely and it has been a‑listed at Radio 2, the physical release of 'Chelsea' should guarantee a Top 100 placing.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number 92.

Mark Ronson
'Stop Me'

Top Twenty due to the perception of this being cool — which it is obviously — but it is also a Good Pop Record although maybe not a Number One single.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number four.

Bels Boys
'Today's The Day'

Even their mum's won't buy this. It's a bloody Sean Maguire cover, for crying out loud.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number 1000.

Siobhan Donaghy
'Don't Give It Up'

Having been added to the Radio 1 'upfront list' (where they chuck the stuff they can't decide whether Chris Moyles will like or not), the Top Ten surely beckons.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number ten.

Beyonce vs Shakira
'Beautiful Liar'

What does the 'vs' add exactly? Nothing. A top five hit until everyone realizes it is actually just another boring single for Beyonce and Shakira to add to their list of other boring singles.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number two.

Matt Willis
'Crash'

Poor Matt Willis. Let's hope that the Mr. Bean hysteria can get this into the Top 40.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number 37.

Lady Sovereign
'Those Were The Days'

This might be the one that justifies all the time, money and effort spent trying to make the whole Lady Sovereign thing work. We have a competition to run in the next few weeks which should help the campaign.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number 68.

Mika
'Love Today'

Another Mika single that will be a Number One record because it is a Mika single.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number One.

Loney, Dear
'I Am John'

Who cares about Swedish pop folk? Not many people but this is a good single.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number 214.

Shiny Toy Guns
'You Are The One'

All those MySpace friends and they still couldn't get their album in the Top 75. Things not looking good for the single.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number 56.

Amy Winehouse
'Back To Black'

Will sell about 800 copies but the album will go back to the top of the charts.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number 27.

Dragonette
'I Get Around'

Just cross everything for them.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number 37.

Groove Armada
'Get Down'

This is not the Mutya song.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number seven.

JoJo
'Anything'

This will probably do alright until everyone realizes that the only good bit is the Toto sample at the very beginning and it all goes to shit when bighead opens her mouth to sing.
Millie Jackson's Popjustice Prediction: Number 14.

NB: The views above are not representative of the views of Popjustice unless they turn out to be accurate in which case we will take credit for having correctly predicted The Future Of Pop.
