Alert the authorities: Olly Murs is about to release the best single of his career

  • July 5, 2016

olly-murs-backwards

And obviously you're thinking "ho ho ho, 'best single of his career' doesn't mean much LOLOLOLOL" but actually fuck off because:

  • 'Seasons' was a GREAT single that should have been Number One.
  • 'Heart Skips A Beat' was also a GREAT single, feat Rizzle Kicks.
  • 'Dear Darlin'' was absolutely amazing, ie a GREAT single.
  • 'Kiss Me' was a GREAT single, although not perhaps a great single choice ie it only got to Number 11 even if it apparently shifted 400,000 copies but that's the Christmas 'marketplace' for you.
  • 'Up' (feat Demi Lovato) had its moments.

And yes. Yes, Olly Murs has released some bad singles. OH CHRIST, has Olly Murs released some bad singles.

'Oh My Goodness' — not a classic. 'Busy': oh dear. And when pop eventually comes to an end and the final tallies are drawn up, 'Stevie Knows' may be recognised as the worst single ever to have been released by a living human.

There is probably a study to be made into the correlation between the quality of Olly Murs' music and the likelihood of him wearing a hat in the video, but today is not the day for that study to be published because — [inlinetweet prefix="Olly Murs' new single:" tweeter="" suffix=""]hold on to your own hat right now, it's about to be blown off and bummed into oblivion[/inlinetweet] — today is the day to acknowledge and celebrate the fact that 'You Don't Know Love', the song Olly's releasing this Friday, is absolutely incredible.

The single starts off sounding like it's going to be a dodgy trend-chasing Justin Bieber ripoff but it actually turns out to be a Grade A midtempobanger with an absolutely enormous "you don't know love til it / tears up your heart and cuts in it" chorus.

Apparently it was co-written by Olly but it seems fair to assume that a little bit of the song's magic might have come from Camille Purcell (who did 'Black Magic' and 'Sax' and is about to launch her own solo pop career), Wayne Hector (who did 75% of the best songs Max Martin didn't do) and Steve Robson (assorted triumphs including but not limited to Rascal Flatts' 'What Hurts The Most', which obviously is one of the classics of our time).

Olly actually whacked a clip of the song's intro online earlier today. The effect this clip has on you will have a lot to do with how you feel about Olly Murs as a human being and the less said about those curtains the better but how nice is it to see a popstar seeming genuinely excited about their new single? Very nice, that's how nice.

Since you've been asking… #YouDontKnowLove

If nothing else you have to be impressed by Olly's screen protector applying skills. There's not a single air bubble on that phone.

Q&A

What's 'You Don't Know Love' about?
It's about Olly being dumped, realising he's been in a toxic relationship and telling his girlfriend (or one-fifth-of-a-boyfriend) how he feels about this.

Are there any parts of the song where there are repeating words?
Funny you should ask — yes there are. The bridge into the first chorus throws up "lies lies lies", "dies dies dies" and "bye bye bye".

Is it a bit 'not sure where this is going' until you get to the chorus and you're like "bloody hell"?
Yes.

What's the best line?
"I know I made some bad decisions, but my last one was you."

Can I conga to this song?
This song has excellent conga potential and we would like Olly to create a relatable and shareable piece of Instagram content to prove or disprove this theory.
