The salient points


  • Louis, Liam, Niall, Zayn and Harry all auditioned as individuals on the seventh series of The X Factor but the boyband pop Gods (Nicole Scherzinger) decided to fuse them together to create One Direction.

  • Their performance at 'judges houses' was good.

  • This wasn't exactly terrible either (Zayn obviously didn't get the memo about the beige theme).

  • When Matt Cardle was announced the winner of the show (they finished third), Harry whispered something in his ear about cats.

  • Their debut single, 'What Makes You Beautiful', sold over 150,000 copies in its first week on sale, which is slightly bonkers.

  • Their debut album includes a song written by Kelly Clarkson called 'Tell Me A Lie'. Pleasingly, it sounds exactly how you want One Direction singing a Kelly Clarkson song to sound.

  • One Direction went to America to support Big Time Rush on their tour but everyone liked One Direction better and then this happened.

  • The Direction are the first British band to have a debut album enter the Billboard 200 album chart at Number One, making them bigger than Take That, The Beatles and even The Spice Girls.

  • In 2012 they released their second album 'Take Me Home', which was quite successful really.
