On the way to Popjustice HQ this morning,

  • March 16, 2012
  • Brad O'Mance

we found ourselves watching this.

It's hard not to find clips like that, about how pop was made before many of the people who make pop now even existed, incredibly seductive. All that stuff about sticky tape on the reel to reel tapes to give the piano just the right amount of wrong-but-right-sounding wobble, and channelling pop from previous eras to give the song just the right amount of old-but-new-sounding amazingness. Then hearing the bits on their own, and watching Benny put them all together at the end looking pretty bloody pleased with himself as well you might if you were Benny out of Abba.

Sitting on the train, we FELL INTO A GLOOM.

We decided that we would not be able to listen to any more music today because none of it would be as good as hearing some isolated "ooh" sounds from thirty years ago.

And then we listened to this.

And everything was alright again.
