Alphabeat interview

"Everyone is telling us we need to wear helmets"

Alphabeat discuss road safety and their current housing situation…

Alphabeat are still in a place where their releases can only be found on limited 7" vinyl and other fashionably collectable formats.

But all that will change in the next twelve months as the band slowly but surely become the most popular band of all time. There is literally no room for anything to go wrong.

With the Danish band living together in East London at the moment, we thought we should speak to singer Anders SG about the Alphabeat housing situation…

Questions: Peter Robinson
Answers: Anders SG from Alphabeat (obviously)

Hello, Anders SG. Which member of Alphabeat is the most untidy?
Everyone thinks that Stine is looking after us but actually she's the one who is most untidy. There's six of us in the band but it is only a five bedroom house — it was really cheap and we had to take it. But because there aren't enough bedrooms, she sleeps in the living room and we all spend a lot of time in there. So maybe it's everyone else making the mess in her room.

Which member of Alphabeat is the worst cook?
Troels — our drummer. I've never really seen him cook. I'm always cooking for the others and he just does the dishes. I made great lasagna the other day but it's been hard adjusting to food over here. In Denmark I'm used to the local grocery store and picking up familiar things but here it's different. We have a Morrisons near us and I don't like Morrisons. Some of the food is just really crappy. I was looking at some chicken and it was so cheap but I just couldn't even look at it. It was so disgusting and it looked too much like a chicken still – I could almost see the face.

Which member of Alphabeat is the grumpiest in the morning?
That's Rasmus. He's really grumpy. It's like a routine for him – when he gets up he's always moaning about being tired or hungover, just this morning he was saying "Oh fuck I'm so hungover!" He looked like crap, but I feel like shit and I'm not complaining. We played a gig in Brighton last night and then we just had a couple of beers afterwards in the bus – well, we had a lot of beers actually and then it was so late when we got home that we couldn't really sleep so some of us went to bed and some of us stayed up and carried on partying. Rasmus is always complaining, but then he's always hungover too.

Which member of Alphabeat gets the most drunk?
It's probably Troels, because he doesn't really drink that often but when he does he's really fast and will drink two or three pints in the time I drink one. Maybe I'm just slow. I'm always a happy drunk though and I'm never the kind of guy who wants to fight when he gets drunk.

Which member of Alphabeat is enjoying London life the most?
Anders B, our guitarist. We all bought bikes and I haven't used mine much but he is back and forth to the studio all the time on his and he seems to be enjoying the roads of London more than we have. He's not wearing his helmet though; everyone is telling us we need to wear helmets.

Which member of Alphabeat misses Denmark the most?
That'd be Rasmus. He's really a family guy – when we lived in Copenhagen he missed his hometown so much and now he's missing home even more. I miss being in our local stadium watching football with my friends and my dad. He sells beers on Sundays at the football stadium and me and my friends always stand in the same place and drink my father's beer. It's the sort of thing you can really miss. It's way too expensive to go to see football in London, but we're going to do it once we're rich.

Which member of Alphabeat is most likely to go out and leave the front door open?
That would be Anders R, he's always forgetting stuff. He always leaves the lights on when he goes out so if anyone was going to leave the door unlocked it would be him. Our bills aren't included in the rent but he says he likes coming back and finding light everywhere so he goes around turning on the lights before he goes out. That would be fine if our bills were included in the rent…

Thank you very much, Anders SG.
