They're bringing 'I'm Too Sexy' back

  • February 9, 2007
  • Popjustice

If for whatever reason you are a viewer of 'ITV1', you may be aware that Right Said Fred are flogging Daz in some TV ads, and are gearing up to re-release 'I'm Too Sexy'.

Like 'Love Shack' by The B‑52s, 'Come On Eileen' by Dexys Midnight Runners and 'Dancing Queen' by Abba, 'I'm Too Sexy' is a terrible song which makes it very difficult to persuade anyone that a lot of the-band-in-question's back catalogue is JUST COMPLETELY BRILLIANT.

There is something about Richard Fairbrass' voice which makes us feel safe and happy in a cold and miserable world and there's an appealingly sentimental feel to the majority of their songs — about being in love and being happy and just getting on with things.

There is probably something deeply important to be written about how in terms of 'the political climate' at the beginning of the 1990s it was fairly significant that what was essentially a gay act could celebrate the concept of sexual liberation but let's just do some YouTube links instead.

'You're My Mate'
Bagpipes! Terrace chants! Deeply homoerotic lyrics about consoling a friend who's split up with his girlfriend!

'Dont Talk Just Kiss'
Anyone who says this isn't one of the Top 100 best pop songs ever written needs their head examining. "There's people, there's love, you and I both apply to the above." Amazing.

'Hands Up (For Lovers)' (iTunes link)
Absolute amazingness we picked up from the 'box of shit' during work experience at Radio 5 in the early 1990s.

We think that instead of wheeling out dodgy remixes of 'I'm Too Sexy' to general public disinterest, RSF should be spending their time writing songs for other popstars. Then again this is probably yet another example of why we should stick to whimsically writing about music rather than A&Ring it.
