Hot Chip's 'Ready For The Floor' is the first great pop single of 2008

  • Popjustice

Longterm Popjustice readers yet to lose patience with what is essentially a procession of YouTube clips and self-referential photographs of mugs and promotional items will remember that in May we wrote about 'Ready For The Floor', a song Hot Chip were considering submitting to Kylie for what would eventually become 'X'.

Alexis from the band had explained to us that they'd done a big gay disco record and, coincidentally, had been asked to contribute to the Kylie sessions — in many ways the Ben Hur of song-grabbing expeditions. Well, they've been performing the track live quite a lot this year and have decided that it should be a Hot Chip song and not a Kylie one.

With an 'I Believe In You'-production sheen it could have been a totally heartstopping Kylie moment but it's probably just as well they didn't give it to Kylie because it would have probably been rejected due to:

» The fact that it's a massive pop tune.

» The fact that it's amazing.

We haven't heard the rest of the album but if it's anything like 'Ready
For The Floor' it could be the best 'everything clicking into place as
band make good on promise of previous albums' moment since Goldftrapp's
'Supernature'.

Here's a bit of 'Ready For The Floor'.

Listen to more of the song at Hot Chip's MySpace page. (It's out at the end of January.)

The video looks like it's going to be pretty good, too…

What we can take from 'Ready For The Floor' being amazing:

It's easier and more rewarding for a cool group to try to be pop than for a pop star to try to be cool.
