The A‑L-L of the new All Saints single.

  • September 18, 2006
  • Popjustice

A. It does not really sound very much like other All Saints singles.

B. It does sound quite a lot like Lily Allen.

C. In particular it sounds like 'Friday Night', track number six on Lily Allen's Number One album 'Alright, Still'.

D. But we are not here to talk about Lily Allen, we are here to talk about All Saints, one of the biggest pop groups of the 1990s and early 2000s who are back to reclaim their throne as the top (Get on with it — Ed)

E. 'Rocksteady', the All Saints single we are discussing, starts off sounding a bit like being lost at Glastonbury on a Sunday afternoon.

F. It is quite a cool pop single but it does not forget that it is a pop single, ie it has choruses, verses and the like.

G. The chorus goes "got my bags packed baby and I'm ready to" and is all about something we don't quite understand. Sometimes pop lyricists need to remember that people CANNOT READ THEIR MINDS and that they have to make it quite clear what they are talking about.

H. Noises made by All Saints on the record include "whooo-oooh-oooh-oooh", "ooh, ticky ticky ticky" and "no-no-no-no".

I. As per ye officiale law of ye good pop single, everything drops out before the final chorus.

J.  It is very very good. Our favourite bit is the bridge into the second chorus, when one of the girls goes "if I let you go, boy I will be a fool" and then the other lot go "what kind of girl wants to be a fool?".

K. We hope there is something on the album which sounds like 'Love Machine' or 'Since U Been Gone' or samples Depeche Mode or has a police siren on it.

L. 'Rocksteady' is something of a toe-tapper, we'll tell you that for nothing. And the more we listen to it, the more we realise it doesn't really sound much like Lily Allen at all.

L. After this debacle we don't think we'll be doing another one of these 'A‑L-L'-type lists anytime soon.
