Well will you look what just plopped onto Spotify: one of the best popstars of the modern age doing a song with some of the most relentless ‘hitmakers’ Britain has to offer, ie it’s Marina & The Diamonds with Clean Bandit.

As you know, this song has taken on an almost mythical status since it was first performed at some festival or other about twelve years ago, and the last time we asked Grace Bandit about the song she said they’d done loads of different versions and hadn’t chosen which one to go with. Many thought it would never appear. Anyway they were wrong because here it is.

Jack River — ‘Fool’s Gold’ https://www.popjustice.com/songs/jack-river-fools-gold/ Fri, 23 Jun 2017 13:36:12 +0000 https://www.popjustice.com/?p=146304 The world can never have too many songs called Fool's Gold.

In a parallel universe, and who’s to say it wouldn’t be a universe worth spending some time in, Charli XCX is making songs like ‘Fool’s Gold’.

In this universe the honour falls to Australian pop person Jack River, who’s following last year’s more subdued ‘Highway Songs #2’ EP with this absolute belter of a single. For the first minute or so the song goes along rather nicely in an oh-this-would-sound-quite-good-in-the-new-season-of-Twin-Peaks kind of way, but it’s the chorus that really does the business.

She’s playing a show in Sydney next weekend, if you’re close or have a huge pile of cash you fancy throwing at plane tickets.

Boba K — ‘What She’s Like’ https://www.popjustice.com/songs/boba-k-whats-she-like/ Thu, 08 Jun 2017 16:12:54 +0000 https://www.popjustice.com/?p=146120 Includes several big "HEY!" moments.

The post Boba K — ‘What She’s Like’ appeared first on Popjustice.

HERE IS THE NEWS:

 • We have been listening to this song A LOT over the last few days.
 • It’s got amazing”HEY!” moments in it.
 • It pulls off an impressive ‘double’ by sounding like loads of stuff that’s already popular while also sounding like nothing that’s already popular.
 • Boba K is not to be confused with Bobak out of history-hasn’t-been-kind-to-them late-90s bonking enthusiasts Another Level.
 • Boba is 24 years old, which is old enough to know what she’s doing but young enough not to know any better, and she’s Ukrainian but lives in London.
 • The press release says she’s worked with Rita Ora’s singing teacher, make of which what you will.
 • Seriously this song’s properly good.
 • They haven’t sent us over any other music yet so we have no idea if this is the start of something immense or the sound of someone shooting their entire load in one song but imagine if there’s more like this. IMAGINE.

ROOM8 feat The Sound Of Arrows — ‘Just You & I’ https://www.popjustice.com/songs/room8-feat-the-sound-of-arrows-just-you-i/ Thu, 01 Jun 2017 13:00:30 +0000 https://www.popjustice.com/?p=146060 Key takeaway: The Sound Of Arrows should be in charge of all songs

The post ROOM8 feat The Sound Of Arrows — ‘Just You & I’ appeared first on Popjustice.

]]>
Last year Swedish/US production ‘outfit’ ROOM8’s huge remix of Elliphant’s ‘Love Me Badder’ showcased a knack for cracking open an already-extremely-good song and finding something different but just as wonderful inside it.

For the duo’s new single the song bit has been left — as all song bits in all tracks should be — to The Sound Of Arrows, whose way with a pop song remains so impressive as to almost border on the obscene. Did you hear the William Orbit-esque reswizzle of ‘Beautiful Life’ they whacked online the other day? That’s what we’re talking about ladies and gentlemen. That right there.

But what of the mysterious (not really mysterious) ‘ROOM8’? “ROOM8 are comprised of Ezra Reich and Nic Johns,” say the words in an email sent to accompany this premiere. “Their work combines elements of modern pop and RnB, winning the acclaim of Noisey, Billboard and more since debuting in 2014 with ‘Visions Of You’. Having worked with the likes of Little Boots, Electric Youth and Kitten, ROOM8 look set for a prolific 2017, with ‘Just You & I’ a stellar new offering.”

To be absolutely honest with you the “modern pop and R&B” aspect is almost if not totally absent from this song — it’s a swoonily sad retro synthbanger — but if Noisey, Billboard AND MORE are into something, you definitely know you’re onto a winner.

Here’s the song.

Lorde — ‘Green Light’ https://www.popjustice.com/songs/lorde-green-light/ Thu, 02 Mar 2017 19:01:18 +0000 https://www.popjustice.com/?p=145385 A round of applause for Lorde 2.0

(This isn’t the actual artwork but let’s be honest the spooky car is already iconic so here it will stay.)

Important notes on this release:

 • It doesn’t sound like Lorde used to sound, but it still sounds like Lorde.
 • “Those rumours, they have big teeth”: what a line.
 • This is crying out for a poppers o’clock reswizzle, but this Lorde/Jack/Joel version is fine for the time being.
 • After this, the album could literally sound like anything couldn’t it? Exciting times.

Speaking to Zane Lowe for its Beats One premiere, Lorde also announced that her new album is called ‘Melodrama’ (good album title), that the song’s about her first major heartbreak and “the moments immediately after your life changes”. It’s “the crying girl at the party”, she says — the girl who, the next morning, starts to rebuild her life.

Jake Alder feat LKA — ‘Chasin’ Time’ https://www.popjustice.com/songs/jake-alder-feat-lka-chasin-time/ Thu, 16 Feb 2017 15:50:39 +0000 https://www.popjustice.com/?p=145187 Luxurious pop from a producer chap and a very promising emerging singer...

The post Jake Alder feat LKA — ‘Chasin’ Time’ appeared first on Popjustice.

Heard any good new songs recently? We have, thanks for asking — and one of them’s the one we’re writing about on this page of the internet.

The story so far:

 • Jake Alder has previously done more tropical-type stuff but ‘Chasin’ Time’ finds him moving in a more sophisticated direction. (‘Horizon’ from a couple of months ago was good too, actually.)
 • Finland-based, Tokyo-born singer LKA is definitely worth getting to know — flick through her SoundCloud and there’s LOADS of promise in her songs, so that’s quite exciting.

LKA has said some quite interesting things about luxurious pensivebanger ‘Chasin’ Time’, including but not limited to:

“I’ve always been a dreamer. Throughout my life I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate artistically with a wide scale of talented individuals. The only problem was that slowly, but surely, I began to listen to what everyone else was saying and didn’t take any time to think about how I wanted to present my art. I was told what my sound was, what kind of lyrics I should write and what kind of clothes I should wear, etc. For a while, I wanted to blame others. However, now as I look back, I realise that the only person I can blame for the mistakes that I have made is myself. I was the one who was actually holding myself back. I could have, so many times, gone with my gut, but I didn’t. I don’t regret a single experience that I have been through, because I believe that every moment along the way has been a valuable lesson for what lies ahead. We should all take a long, hard look in the mirror before we try to find the fault in others. Now, as I have processed a lot of what I have been through so far, I feel like I’m at a point where I am done “chasin’ time gone by”, and instead, I want to take one step at a time towards whatever is next.”

It’s always good when popstars sort things out in their heads, isn’t it? It means they can get on with what they’re good at rather than having DARK THOUGHTS knocking around and getting in the way of things. That said good pop often comes from bad thoughts so it’s tricky isn’t it.

You can keep up with Jake on his Twitter and LKA on hers, if you fancy. (LKA will probably have a Tove Lo-level banger or two before the end of the year.)

Katy Perry — ‘Chained To The Rhythm’ https://www.popjustice.com/songs/katy-perry-chained-to-the-rhythm/ Fri, 10 Feb 2017 07:11:25 +0000 https://www.popjustice.com/?p=145131 It goes on and on and on (for three minutes and 57 seconds).

Look at this, here’s a tweet we did a couple of weeks ago which received a ‘like’ from a certain Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson.

When it comes to Katy Perry, music that sounds precisely how you want it to sound means music that sounds a lot like the music you’ve heard before but also sounds like none of the music they’ve released before, and on the lyrical front you’d probably also be wanting something that reflects Pezza’s apparently recent sense of wide awokeness.

On those fronts Katy’s pretty much pulled it out of the bag with ‘Chained To The Rhythm’, a Sia-cowritten and Max Martin co-produced song that seems to satirise the well-worn lyrical concept of dancing your troubles away while also accepting that sometimes things are so bad that it can seem like the only option. What with it being a Sia song there’s a bit of metaphor flying around here because in a way wouldn’t you say the situation in which society finds itself is a bit like a disco, with the prevailing political climate being a bit like a relentless grinding unavoidable rhythm?

Makes you think doesn’t it.

Anyway here it is ten times in a row.

Courage x Lao Ra — ‘Wild At Heart’ https://www.popjustice.com/songs/courage-x-lao-ra-wild-at-heart/ Tue, 07 Feb 2017 15:56:00 +0000 https://www.popjustice.com/?p=145079 Is there a better genre than sad orchestral electronic pop? No there is not.

The post Courage x Lao Ra — ‘Wild At Heart’ appeared first on Popjustice.

Look we know they say ‘don’t just a Soundcloud stream by its jpg’ but this is just taking the piss. In short: Courage, of whose expertise on the pop front you will be well aware following his work with RAY BLK, has teamed up with future queen of the pop cosmos Lao Ra, and between them they’ve created a spooky and pensive dreampop sadbanger called ‘Wild At Heart’.

As for further listening — well, Courage has an EP knocking about (this song isn’t on it but ‘We Had The Night’ and ‘Come Alive’ are really good) and Lao Ra, as you must surely be aware, is a) generally doing her own thing and b) being very good at it.

You can listen to ‘Wild At Heart’ below or over on Spotify.

Marnie — ‘Alphabet Block’ https://www.popjustice.com/songs/marnie-alphabet-block/ Tue, 24 Jan 2017 10:03:46 +0000 https://www.popjustice.com/?p=144918 Here's the first taste of one of your favourite albums of 2017.

Do you, perhaps, like the sound of this, the new song by celebrated Ladytron vocalist Helen Marnie?

Well:

a) You are correct — this is a top notch pop artefact.

b) You’re in luck — there’s a whole bloody album of the stuff coming in a couple of months. On March 25, to be precise. The album’s called ‘Strange Words And Weird Wars’ and it’s full of tunes and synths so you’re on safe ground. Our favourite songs on the album are ‘Lost Maps’ and ‘Electric Youth’ but that might change in the future because this really is an incredibly impressive album that deserves a lot of attention. The press release throws around names like Kylie, La Roux and Ladyhawke so that’s the sort of thing we’re dealing with here. (It also mentions ‘shoegaze’, make of which what you will.)

It is in your best interests to keep up with Marnie on Twitter and Facebook.

Tyni – ‘Fighter’ https://www.popjustice.com/songs/tyni-fighter/ Fri, 06 Jan 2017 13:50:57 +0000 https://www.popjustice.com/?p=144778 The first track from a very good new EP.

Tyni’s a really promising British singer songwriter who’s been working with close collaborator Wayne Wilkins on a load of tune-stuffed, super-expressive modern pop music.

There’s an EP on the horizon because hey, it’s 2017 and there are always EPs on the horizon; this one’s tracks were recorded between LA, London and Tyni’s hometown of Sheffield and there are some top notch moments ‘to be had’ on that.

First up’s spirited semibanger ‘Fighter’, and you can keep up with Tyni over on Twitter.
