Look, we liked Katy Perry’s gold truck as much as the rest of you but we really must insist on publishing a new Popjustice Almighty because there are, frankly, five great things and one shit thing that need to be discussed right now.
And they are…
Somewhere in the dark recesses of the Popjustice ‘back end’ there is a post from well over a year ago, still unpublished, banging on about the amazingness of Bebe Rexha. Back then we’d heard a few great songs that still don’t seem to have been released, seen a few videos that are still knocking around on YouTube and been slightly perplexed by a previous side-project with Pete Wentz. It felt like she was an instant superstar who was very much on the verge of happening.
And of course for reasons unknown the post was never published and Bebe did indeed go on to happen in a slightly below the radar fashion, doing things like writing the massive hook for Eminem and Rihanna’s ‘Monster’ and the rather good ‘Glowing’ for Nikki Williams, subsequently appearing on the Cash Cash single ‘Take Me Home’. It seemed, for a while, as if it was too late for us ever to be able to say look, do you know what, this Bebe Rexha thing is really good. It’s probably how Pitchfork now feel about Union J. Sure, they might want to big up the sparky quartet – especially after they got their own range of dolls. But they weren’t there from the start. How can Pitchfork suddenly start writing about Union J in June 2014? They probably can’t. The moment has passed. It’s like running after a bus: the faster it goes, the more likely you are to land in some shit when you try to hop aboard. Union J may never appear on Pitchfork.
But now here we are, stating very clearly and in bold red letters that Bebe Rexha is a great pop thing.

That would be pretty splendid.
(Precisely one massive banger wouldn’t have hurt but we’ll take what we’ve been given at this stage.)
This is almost the reverse scenario of the Bebe Rexha thing: we quite liked the idea of Rizzle Kicks’ management launching a Dalston-bewitching stealthpop girlband, but it all seemed quite weak and boring from the first couple of releases.
EXCEPT! Their new tune, ‘(H)ours’, is pretty good.
