We used to do this every so often, and we are going to start doing it again because it was sometimes quite good.

Basically, we ask a ‘panel’ of people in and around the business we call pop to select one song they would like to recommend to you, the Popjustice viewer.

Think it sounds simple? Well it is.

And this week’s tips are:

Tanlines – ‘All Of Me’

Notes Aiden: “This is a brilliant tune. I only came across this the other day but have already picked it about seven times for the dreaded ‘your turn to pick a song on YouTube when there’s a group of people who want to hear a good song’ time. It’s a dead happy tune that feels appropriate in any occasion, rain or shine, and the video is also ace. Therefore this is my PJ Tip!”

AVAN LAVA – ‘It’s Never Over’

Keenan Cahill & Electrovamp – ‘Hands Up’

Notes Raj: “There’s something to be said about making pop music in your bedroom, and this video speaks novels. Take two Welsh sisters and combine their spunky electro-pop with one of YouTube’s viral sensations and you have a fun-loving pop romp that is catchy as all hell, and head-boppingly brilliant.”

Dragonette – ‘Live In This City’

Tipped by Malcolm Mackenzie, Editor of We Love Pop magazine

Notes Malcolm: “Dragonette are probably the best pop group in the world. Not sure why the rest of the world hasn’t twigged, but maybe a few more ears will prick up for ‘Live In This City’ which combines the strut of The Stones’ ‘Start Me Up’ with a fist-pump of homage to Starship’s ‘We Built This City’. A disco-rousing throwaway slab of Friday night braggadocio that makes you want to hit the streets like a Gibb brother.”

Rustie ft AlunaGeorge – ‘After Light’ 

Tipped by Adeel Amini, TV producer and the man responsible for choosing all the amazing horse-related songs for the equestrian events at the Olympics

Notes Adeel: “Bangin’ pop-step production + one of the hottest new acts in town = the sound of east London imploding, and a beat that’ll probably launch a thousand TV montages from now until Christmas. Enjoy it before it starts being associated with slow-mo shots of Clare Balding flicking her hair or some budget countdown show called The Best of Lady Grantham.”

They may not all be your cup of tea, but the tips don’t lie.

The ‘Curtain Call’ hitmaker spoke about this very idea to the Daily Star, admitting: “I feel like I’m putting my baby off to school.”

“If you come to my house and get too drunk you’ll end up listening to my album,” he threatened. “I went out with a mate, got back and realised we’d gone full circle and listened to it twice.”

We will tell you this for nothing, readers: there is nothing worse than a drunk popstar listening to their own music. NOTHING.

The X Factor alumnus said these exact words about himself in an interview (found here): “When we first started you could say I was a bit of a pain in the arse. I didn’t know how to get my ideas across, so I’d just say no to everything.”

“Eventually I learned how to speak up,” he comforted us all by adding. “Just because we might be disagreeing in the studio, it’s not a row.”

Aiden also dropped a little underhand comment about the very place that brought him fame.

“I think I could’ve used the show to get a No 1 single and an OK album, but I didn’t want that, I wanted an album that was great from start to finish, like all the albums I love, and that’s what I think we’ve done.”

Fair enough.

Aiden Grimshaw’s ‘Curtain Call’ was inspired by Hugh Grant.

Intense Troubadour Aiden Grimshaw spoke about this very odd inspiration to The Sun, saying: “I’d bought a piano for £50 and I started messing around. I had a vivid image of Hugh Grant on his knees at the end of a rom-com. That’s what this song is inspired by.”

Aiden also let slip that The X Factor contestans actually mimed (!!) with Bon Jovi. “I mimed with him on X Factor. Whenever I’m listening to Magic FM and ‘Living On A Prayer’ comes on I think ‘I mimed with them.’”

“Oh and I was once at a party with Rita and Gail Platt from Corrie, but I bottled speaking to them,” he added.

Intense Troubadour Aiden Grimshaw’s ‘unveiled’ the artwork for his debut opus ‘Misty Eye’.

There are lots of signifiers of Aiden’s authenticity featured in it, things like rope (manmade and strong), old computers (the rise of technology!), pills (he sometimes gets headaches) and a clock (he likes to know what the time is).

‘Misty Eye’ is released on August 20.

In a double-page advert for Aiden’s album, which includes an amazing rundown of his various positioning ‘highlights’ but fails to mention the first single’s chart position, we also learn about how Aiden’s nearest and dearest reacted to ‘Misty Eye’.

“I brought my dad up to London with my uncle – who are both 45 – got them pissed and put the album on,” Aiden explained.

“I was jamming, off my tree (!). I turned around and my uncle was doing a one-legged dance (!!) and my dad was buzzing his tits off (!!!). My grandma likes the album as well – so, yeah, maybe it does have real crossover potential.”

Amazing.

As for his ‘mates’, he had this to say: “It probably will take a while to win people over, but I’ve made something that I can take back to my friends, who are all hashtag-lads (!!!!). If the album was shit or if there was anything on there that was terrible they’d tell me.”

Hm…

We’re not sure what he means exactly, but let’s hope it’s nothing to do with the proportions of his penis.

Talking to Notion magazine, he went on to say that he knew he’d have some obstacles to overcome in terms of people actually wanting to hear his new stuff.

“I think that if I was about to listen to us, I wouldn’t expect it to be good,” he said. “As soon as you say you were on The X Factor, that’s it. You’re that guy-off-The-X-Factor, forever more. I’m the guy who sang ‘Mad World’. But I’m not that kid trying to be cool anymore. I’ve grown up since then.”

Talking about his new album, that guy-off-The-X-Factor said he wasn’t looking “for jazz-handsy number ones” (which is just as well really given the performance of his first single), but wanted to make an album that showed his “own sound”.

Grimshaw’s second single ‘Curtain Call’ is out on August 12.
