En Vogue: Reborn To Sing!

« on: August 11, 2008, 10:55:46 PM »

Hey everybody.

I am not sure if it has already been posted here but I found out on Saturday that Siobhan was to be dropped today by Parlophone with the official line of "Due to lack of commercial success"

I could not post this news earlier as I wanted it to be announced by Siobhan herself or her people & it would seem that it has been put up on her official forum earlier today.

I have heard though that two independent label's are keen to sign her already which I think personally is the best thing for Siobhan.

I can't see her getting another big contract with a big commercial record company & especially with the type of music she does an independent label could do wonders for her.

So again it is bad news for the former Sugababe, but hopefully she will finally find the right label for her, they do say 3rd time lucky afterall.

Aww. I guess her label wasn't impressed with what she had recorded for her third album and decided to "part ways".

Oh well. C'est la vie and another label for ms Donaghy!

This was to be expected. 'Her' sound isn't too far removed from other acts but her label marketed her all wrong.

Can't say I'm sad to her about it.

i'm not worried about her. i'm sure something will come up, be it singing or writing for other artists. She should have licensed "Ghosts" out to TV and film before though - its such an atmospheric and mood driven album and would have a lot of potential in that market.

What took them so long?
This isn't surprising to me, unlike Mutya where I never expected her to be dropped after two Top 10 singles and a Gold certified album.

From what i've heard they prolonged the agony because they had a good personal relationship with siobhan...even if she sold f all records. Otherwise, its been well documented that Mutya isn't the most warm personality to meet on a dark night (let alone manage).

Ha Ha! on Siobhan's forums her fangays are discussing if Mutya will sign Siobhan to her "Real girlz" management group (co-set up with Jodi Lei!!!!)

Well done! That Perry Como easy-listening shit she last released was dreadfull!
(Or else: how nice for Parlophone to blame Siobhan for the fracass, while they screwed up in stunning fashion in every step of the process).

If she really moves to an indie label, it's all been for the best -she needed to have done so before Ghosts.

It's been said before but Ghosts' failure is perhaps the biggest Popinjustice of all time, and I do hope Siobhan doesn't throw in the towel and swan back into a chorus line somewhere. I sense she's got this massive pop album in her somewhere and just needed to get an Odd album out of her system - though the odder moments are my favourite on Ghosts, so I would follow this woman into war either path she takes (bar Rent).

Unsurprised in the slightest but I'm hoping that the indie labels will be sensible and sign her to a good contract without too much worry about her sales. "Ghosts" has only gotten better and better as I've listened to it, and I sense that she still does have incredible untapped potential as a pop artist… it's a shame she hasn't sold, because her album was brilliant.

It's a shame she doesn't have the same capital to trade on as Tracey Thorn, who's also signed with EMI and whose album I think of as vaguely similar to Siobhan's- Out of the Woods did slightly better than Ghosts with no promotion (a clause Thorn stipulated in her contract) and Tracey's going to be kept on by EMI because of her success with Everything but the Girl. But that's neither here nor there.

In any event I really don't think of this as much of a setback. I'm sure she'll be picked up sooner rather than later and I'm hopeful that the label that she chooses to sign with are going to be more supportive of her than Parlophone. Perhaps Bella Union?

Least surprising news ever.

I like Siobhan, I like her a lot. Her music is good but is never going to have mass appeal, and Parlophone are screwed anyway. It was just never going to happen.

The fact she seems to be more enthusiastic and productive about DJ'ing and performing on stage was a slight hint as to where her future lies.

She could just go the route of Charlotte Hatherley and set up her own company and just put out her music that way.

She seemed plenty enthusiastic about music to me… I mean, she worked one-on-one with a heroin addict for months to get Ghosts to sound the way she wanted. I think that evinces some dedication to the craft.

Is she still working on album #3 or has that temporarily ceased now that Parlophone have let her go and stopped paying for things? (Were they even paying for anything before? Shiv might be lucky to get off now, before the ship completely sinks.)

Oh, meh! I'm upset about her being dropped because she is such a ground-breaking artist that she really doesn't deserve it but I'm not upset about her being dropped from Parlophone. It's all very well being signed to a major record company but it's pointless if they don't do her any good, which they didn't. I'm sure she will have other offers - I just hope she accepts them, doesn't give it up (no pun intended) and that album #3 isn't too many years away.

I love Siobhan and I LOVE Ghosts and Revolution In Me and I feel sad that it may take quite a long while before we hear anything new from her, having regard to the fact that she is now without a contract. However, I am only surprised by how long it took for this to happen in the current climate and I presume that she may have delivered a few new songs to the label and that Parlo didn't think they cut the mustard. I wouldn't trust Parlo's judgement nowadays but there we are anyway.

Siobhan's second record ended up being more mainstream pop than I expected it to be, which was not a bad thing (although I would have loved more stuff in the vain of the slightly less-immediately-accessible title track), but I agree with whomever it was that said, on this thread, that she is unlikely to be a huge record seller in the future.

This was inevitable, and sincerely is a shame.

I don't see why Siobhan could never be a commercial success - as people have mentioned, some of the moodier tracks on Ghosts would have been perfect for soundtracks and there's no reason why radio wouldn't pick up on a track like Goldfish. There's definitely a market for Siobhan - she's just yet to find it.

Maybe Siobhan could move to Patrick Wolf's label? I know it's no Real Girl Productions, but...

I agree that there's a market for her -  she just needs to get out there and TOUR, play at festivals etc.

This is VERY important. I can't believe that any concept of playing live was abandoned in favour of Rent. In all honest, Shiv isn't completely blameless when it comes to the commercial shortcomings of the album.

Exactly. I can understand that it was the opportunity of a lifetime, but still, when you got an album out you should work on that first and then move on to other projects. After the singles flopped it seemed like she totally gave up on this project and lost any faith in it, instead of working hard to get at least some minimum reward.
Promo is a big part of anything, especially nowadays. You can't just drop an album and think it'll sell based on good reviews and word-of-mouth.

If I remember correctly Siobhan was due to be opening act for a male act until Rent came along - I've always assumed it was Patrick Wolf, but who knows. That would've been great for her though, as I think they both are aimed at the same market.

A bit off topic - but am I the only one who keeps reading RevolutionInMe's avatar as "Chewing CUM"?

Poor Siobhan.  I still listen to the majority of Ghosts all the time and it ranks up there as one of my most favourite albums.  It truly deserved better but if the label are only going to invest i one poster on the london tube then she can surely do better.  But yes, she also needs to tour and publicise her own work more.  I think she knew this was coming though and so shouldn't stop the work that she's doing on her 3rd album (i hope!)

Pretty gutting, but an indie label would suit her much better.  I just hope she doesn't decide to pack it all in, she's had so much bad luck it isn't even funny.  Don't Give It Up!  etc etc

I knew this was going to happen, but it makes me feel really sad to read about it anyway. Siobhan is my favorite singer right now, I still listen to Ghosts and Revolution In Me a lot. I just hope she gets a new label, and release a thrid CD. I hope is not the end of her musical career, she has so much to offer.

It's quite funny to see how the talented Sugababes (by that i mean Siobhan and Mutya) get dropped form their labels, but the Sugababes keep selling records. I have to say I'm enjoying Girls, it's way better than About You Know. Still, you can't compare that to anything on Ghosts.
