Earlier today, while we were listening to the new Noisettes single, we decided to draw a picture of the record sleeve. Impressed? Don't tell us you're not.
After we had finished our illustration we noticed that the song was STILL GOING. For those of your who haven't yet heard 'Don't Upset The Rhythm', or for those of you who don't realise you've heard it, it's the song on this advert.
Yes, that one. Sounds quite good on the ad, doesn't it. But Jesus wept, viewers, when you've got it on the stereo it feels like time has somehow stopped. The radio edit's only 3'10", the poor fella, and it still feels like it's about ten minutes long. The CD single did not stay on for the 'album version' (an extra 38 seconds - bloody hell!) or the 'instrumental'.
HERE ARE THE FACTS
1. Some songs should actually only be thirty seconds long.
No promises but we will probably be doing some 'Twittering' and posting some photos live (unless we simply get drunk) (or get told off) so if you fancy keeping tabs on what's happening at the launch check out www.twitter.com/popjustice for updates.
It's hard to articulate precisely how amazing the new Saint Etienne single is. So here's the clip we had before Christmas to remind you.
The single's coming out as an unlimited download edition, and as a limited edition of 500 7" singles, 500 CD1s and 500 CD2s. Each format is signed by a different band member. The download format is not signed. You'll be able to order the physical formats from midday tomorrow (Wednesday) at this link.
It is a bit ridiculous that the band's best single in 812 years is only coming out as a limited thing without a picture on the sleeve and with no sign of a video. Oh well. :(
Thanks to everyone who's been emailing in links, clips and MP3s of various 'Sex On Fire' remixes - we reckon this one (above) is the best of the bunch.
Pet Shop Boys are remixing Lady Gaga's 'Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)'.
Amazing.
There's a Frankmusik mix as well which is definitely on the right side of listenable.
It's a good job these remixes are happening because the album version is, of course, bordering on unlistenable. We wonder if it the song - the worst on the album by some considerable distance - will be a UK single after 'Poker Face' (the best song on the album by some considerable distance)?
2. "'Do The Strand'?" think Popjustice's pensionable readers. "As in the Roxy Music song of yesteryear? The opening track of their iconic second album 'For Your Pleasure'?"
3. Yes, that 'Do The Strand'. Scissor Sisters have quite literally covered 'Do The Strand'.
4. They've covered it for War Child, who've got a new album out. The whole point of this new album is that a load of old duffers ('legends') have delved into their back catalogues and picked tracks for The Youth to cover. In this instance we find Roxy Music selecting 'Do The Strand' for Scissor Sisters.
5. Thirty seconds of it sound like this:
6. The rest of it will be online later today on War Child's YouTube channel, or streaming on the website of 'official media partner etc etc' NME. All the blah blah blah is at www.warchild.org.uk/heroes.
7. There's a great bit towards the end of this song where Jake stops doing the lady voice and it goes all deep 'n' exciting.
8. Do you know what? We're aware that their last album campaign ended a bit like a wet Wednesday and we know that the second album wasn't really what a lot of people (eg us) wanted from a second Scissor Sisters album but we are TOTALLY UP FOR a big Scissor Sisters comeback during 2009. We don't know what they've been up to (apart from a rather nice Del Marquis track we were sent last year but, uselessly, forgot to write about) but if they've got it right a Scissors comeback could be one of 2009's big pop things.
1. THE AMAZING LAUNCH OF DIANA VICKERS, INTERNATIONALLY SUCCESSFUL WARBLIN' POP SENSATION
This woman is the new Patti Smith. Alright then - she's clearly not. She's nothing of the sort. In fact she's totally NOT the new Patti Smith. And thank God for that - one Patti Smith is more than enough. (Cheer up love, etc.) Regardless of what Diana is the new one of, she is amazing. Although presumably her fair and artist-friendly X Factor contract might be getting in the way of things. But still. 'Shake a leg', etc etc.
2. THE INVENTION OF SOME DECENT HEADPHONES FOR iPHONE 3G
Sorry about this, readers, but can anyone - ANYONE - suggest some decent in-ear headphones for an iPhone 3G? What we want is these but with a remote control on that can control the iPod bit (and volume) of your iPhone. Handsfree calls would also be handy but they're not strictly necessary because let's be honest you look like a lunatic walking around with your iPod on, talking to yourself. Either a lunatic or someone 'singing along' to a spoken word recording. A spoken word recording recreating a phone conversation. Basically you look like a lunatic. Anyway, headphones. Anyone?
3. A STUPID RAVE-UP DANCE VERSION OF KINGS OF LEON'S 'SEX ON FIRE' Has this already happened and simply passed us by? If not it should deffo happen very soon indeed. Note To The Music Industry: please keep Popjustice up to speed with your Kings Of Leon-related escapades.
Don't bother trying to watch this video for the Tinchy Stryder track, you'll have to click here to go to YouTube to see it. Anyway, the point we were going to make it that the single's out today to purchase.
Things we like about this song apart from the obvious fact that it's brilliant:
1. Tinchy roped in one of the most distinctive UK vocalists of the moment (ie Taio Cruz) but vocodered his voice to buggery and back meaning that he might as well have just got the cleaner in.
2. Use of the word 'misleaded'. According to Google only Taylor Dayne has used the word (clue: IT'S NOT A WORD) 'misleaded' in a song before.
3. Taylor Dayne disables the embedding of her videos, as well. It's all the rage.
4. When we said just now that 'misleaded' isn't a word we weren't really being fair - if something appears in a pop song it automatically becomes an official word. That is how words work.
5. If you don't believe us you can ask your English teacher. We know it's true, we readed it in a book.
