You folks in the UK are lucky you can actually dream of watching acts like Dubstar in concert. Those of us across in the pond have to live vicariously through you UK-based folks. It just ain't fair!!!!

Well, the Newcastle Cluny gig is tonight, their first in 14 years, so I'll report back. They aren't on until 10-ish, probably for an hour or so. Will try and get a few pics on my phone and note the setlist for those interested.

EDIT: They were just inteviewed on a local TV news show and they confirmed an EP release in October. I guess the album will be out in the new year? Now I've seen them, and played a few tracks this afternoon, and with the prospect of seeing them live tonight, I'm slightly more interested to hear new stuff.

    As promised...

    Setlist;

I'm In Love With A German Filmstar
    Anywhere
    Not So Manic Now
    Windowpane [new song!]
    Stars
    Disgraceful

    Encore - Elevator Song [Acoustic]

Sarah looked sublime. She had on Nike trainers, a long, black puffy/chiffon dress and a punky, sleeveless, black leather jacket. She looked like she hadn't aged a day... she was also terrified. You could see her shaking, which is quite the thing considering how much gigging she did not only in Dubstar but in Client too. She had said she needed the words to the new song, Windowpane, as it was so new, but despite holding them in her hand, she never once looked at them. Bless her. I met the band briefly afterwards (they signed my copy of Disgraceful!) and they said they were hoping to get this EP out for October and that two videos were being made at the minute by Emily from Client's boyfriend. I think one of the new songs is called Superstar. I still can't get over a woman so beautiful and talented as Sarah is so very, very shy and nervous. She actually sounded better tonight than she did when I saw her back in the day. Very interesting to see them back together, though. Worth seeing if you get the chance next year. Oh, and the new song was brilliant. Very much in the vein of Disgraceful-era, but with a modern edge. I was suprised at how poppy and catchy it was, I guess I was expecting something abstract and moody, but it was the usual love-lorn, sombre dance-pop we know and love.

This is all very exciting! Can't wait to hear some new music and go to see them!

Mind you, I'm not impressed with that setlist, mainly Elevator Song. That should have been replaced by the amazing No More Talk, surely?!
So you like show tunes? That doesn't mean you're gay. It just means you're AWFUL!!!

They totally ignored albums 2 and 3, but it was a short set.

I'm so excited to see new photos of Dubstar. I hope they tour the country. What was it like Anfunny? Was it packed? Was there a good atmosphere?

Well, The Cluny is rather small. There were about 100-150 people there, many of them friends/family of the band I think, so it was quite a warm reception for them. Shall we say a minor triumph? Sarah was very nervous... bless her.

My last (and in fairness only) encounter with Sarah involved someone spilling her drink, her going mental, me laughing, Sarah going even more mental and asking 'who the fuck I was' and us deciding the after party might not be the best idea ...

    Maybe she was nervous ...

It's no secret she had a bit of a drink problem. I believe she hasn't drank for a long time now. A lot of Dubstar gigs ended with her being an emotional wreck, but these days she brings a thermal mug of tea on stage, not a bottle of wine.

Ha, you can even see the thermal mug in that picture.

Disgraceful was one of the best pop albums of the 90s.

It's one of my favourite albums ever. There's something very, very human about it. It's funny and tragic, makes me teary in places, makes be very happy in others. It was lovely to finally get my copy signed by all three last night, just to make it that tiny bit more special. A new EP in the next 8 weeks, though. Hope it's brilliant.

Not So Manic Now always make me think of Kirsty MacColl. Its got that vibe to it.

I know what you mean Eric, it's that genuine melancholy in the delivery... I've branded Dubstar Melantronic!

As it turns out Circle Turns was an amazing song.

I think we're getting it eventually as an mpfree, ahead of the EP in October.

Nope! I adore pop songs that ustilise mandolin. That and the devastating Ghost both employ it brilliantly. I like to think it's a nod to ABBA's gorgeous One Of Us...

Decidedly Dubstar b-side, but lovely to hear new material nonetheless!

    Elevator song!

  22. #272
    this is too much like a b-side - and NOT a radio-worthy b-side either.

We're no longer getting an EP this month. There will be a mpfree before Christmas and an EP "early next year", followed by a Stephen Hague produced album. 'The Day I See You Again' from Disgraceful has meanwhile been covered by Propaganda vocalist Claudia Brucken for her new album of covers, which is also produced by Stephen Hauge...

New Claudia album! Hurrah! The live set didn't really appeal to me.
