Thread: Saint Etienne.

And doesn't the intro to "DJ" sound like a beefed-up "Action"?

  2. #2477
According to the badly worded note on the Universal store website...

"Download info for customers that pre-ordered this box set will receive an email by end of day on 21st May 2012 (GMT)."
Replying with GIFs is like arguing with a tree - really boring.

Oh well... as long as it's today. I'm expecting Record Doctor Dub to be a load of looped acapella samples that go on forever, with a laidback beat. It was probably intended for the remix CD with the deluxe version but didn't fit in for whatever reason. I wonder who mixed it? The other two unreleased tracks sound like film soundtrack leftovers don't they? Hmmm.

I'm fully expecting tracks 2 and 3 to last about 2 minutes each if we're lucky. But you never know, we might get some vocals in there.

I just imagine 'Peter Pan' to be about Cliff Richard for some reason.

  6. #2481
Well, presumably because his nickname is The Peter Pan Of Pop?

Mine didn't arrive today. Boo, Amazon!

  8. #2483
oh wow! It's a really great album. so pleased!
and there does seem to be renewed interest in them. will it chart?

  9. #2484
I'd imagine as album sales are so low at the moment, if their hardcore fan base buys it, it should chart fairly reasonably (hopefully).

  10. #2485
Um, I was just sent the download link for the album but what it links to is something called The Light The Dead by some band called Soulsavers which I have no interest in whatsoever...

  11. #2486
Yep, same here. Oh dear. It's a group that supported Depeche Mode on tour and Dave Gahan is on this album too.

Mind you, it gets 4/5 in The Guardian.

Me too. Emailed Universal but I doubt they'll fix this until tomorrow. FFS!

Is I've Got Your Music longer? Is the second verse present? god I need to hear the album version ASAP.
Try not to read this. You just did didn\'t you? oh well...

If there are countless errors on the packaging, I'm not going to bother buying this. Not after the mess with My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. Honestly, how much effort does it take to get these things right. People have been making records and CDs for decades...it's just not necessary.

Yes, I'm sure it's all about the music etc etc...but actually, it's not. The mistakes are part of the album, and thus spoil it.

Well you're missing out on a treat then.

This has rocketed straight to my second favourite Saint Etienne album, I'll have to give it more time to see if it usurps Good Humor!

Why should anyone pay £9-13 for something that's full of mistakes? I've got every other St E album, but if they and their people can't take the time to make sure the product they release into the world is actually correctly done, why expect people to part so eagerly with their money?

It's happening a lot nowadays, and if the record industry wants to survive, it needs to stop all these stupid cock-ups, oversights, delays and wrong information.

This is their best album, I have decided.
No filler at all. So many highs.

HAVE to see them live, again
and I hope they play this in full!

It's not 'full' of mistakes it's got two, or just one if you buy the standard edition. It just seems weird to miss out on an album thats arguably the best of their career because of two mistakes on the packaging?

I know what you're saying, but if fans just accept what they're given, it leads to laziness/sloppiness, call it what you will. They're not the only act to have done this lately, and it's obviously a trend. Competence is not what it used to be, sadly! I don't like paying money for something that's got errors, be they audible, visual or both.

Well something from the email is taking ages to download......has anybody got the correct download yet?

  21. #2496
I have my digital box set content! If you all click the link in the second email again, you will find it's the right download now.

01 Record Doctor Dub 4:40 Exactly as I predicted, the acapella vocal looped over a laidback groove... actually really nice!
02 Peter Pan 4:54 Full vocal, mid-tempo number... very clearly an actual outtake from Words And Music By... it's great! Very happy.
03 Lion Green 2:40 Introspective, atmospheric instrumental... not bad.
04 Wouldn't It Be Nice 3:12 As Mojo magazine freebie CD from April.

With regards the mistakes.... There are mistakes on many of their releases as it happens. I sympathise with Eric, who has pop music OCD like me and the packaging should be as good as the music, and when it's not, it spoils it a bit. In the case of Words And Music By... I think it was very expensive to have the front cover done and the tracklisting obviously changed after they gave it to the designers. Asking them to re-do it may have just been out of the question? As for the deluxe edition, well, shit happens. I'd never not support Saint Etienne because of a typo, mind. It's all part of their charm. My favourite mistake, by the way, is the B-side to A Good Thing, the title of which they gave over the phone as it went to press. "Gotta Jump" was heard as "Got A Job", and Sanctury even used an old demo of the song instead of the finished Xenomania production in error. The correct version and title appeared on Now 4 EP.

  22. #2497
Yep, it's correct now. Currently listening to the first track of the EP!

  23. #2498
Ah good, downloading the proper one now. And the Soulsavers album for nothing too - bonus!

My favourite error regarding A Good Thing was how they were supposed to only press 1000 of the 7" singles to make them limited, but the order went through to only press 1000 copies of all three formats. I was surprised that wasn't mentioned in the deluxe edition booklet, as they mentioned the over-pressing of the 2CD edition versus the 1CD.

Love the album very very much. Not loving the errors on the cover -- I have the same sort of OCD as Eric Generic, I would KNOW there is an error. Arghhh. Think I'll stick to the vinyl. (I hope that one has a correct design!)

  25. #2500
All of the formats have the same front cover, so the error will ALWAYS be on this record.
