Exactly. It's not difficult. There is too much swearing and general lack of politeness and manners on the internet in general. PJ doesn't really need to add to it.

There used to be a bit of an unspoken agreement between everyone that words like bitch and cunt - or any swearing - may be used sparingly, but it would never become a habit. Unfortunately, once things start going overboard we're forced to step in and really enforce the rule. It's probably unfair but it is what it is, and I don't think we need to have this same discussion every other week.

I don't have a problem with swearing, I'm sure most of us are guilty of it.

But we've reached a point where it seems to have become acceptable and normal to describe A.Popstar as a cunt and I'm not really sure where along the line that became less of an insult than calling someone the b word that we're not allowed to post.
Warning: The above post may contain sarcasm...

Ensnare The Senses - lots of good points there. The difference between the front page and the forum is one that it's always been hard to make sense of in my own head and explain to others on the forum.

Ideally, the forum would follow the lead of the front page. Bad language used sparingly, hopefully never too cruelly or viciously, often for supposed 'comic effect' and so on. Sometimes I might overstep the mark a bit. Anyway I think a lot of people do grasp that but of course when it's 2am, you've had a drink and you're on a forum being wound up by someone's views on a Ke$ha b-side, perhaps that rationality goes out of the window. Unfortunately, in the cold light of day a forum full of people swearing at each other and calling people cunts just isn't very nice to look at, and from my point of view it's certainly not very nice to be ultimately responsible for.

Of course there are also people who don't just get carried away - they're just being not very pleasant. I'd hope that our rules have meant that comments of the 'when will this b-i-t-c-h just die' variety that we all see clogging up forums and comments boxes across the internet are kept to a minimum on Popjustice, just as our rules about textspeak have meant that the Popjustice forum is, in the most part, easy to read.

I wish there didn't have to be rules like this but it's just not possible to allow a largeish community to use some collective sense of caution or occasion when it comes to language. The rules have to be in place because a lot of forum members don't appreciate any sort of subtlety or lightness of touch. I've made the comparison before - it's like posting MP3s. When I do it on the front page it's because I've got full permission from the label to do so. But there has to be a blanket rule against posting MP3s on the forum, because while some forum members would only post legal links, many wouldn't, and it's just not possible to moderate on a case-by-case basis.

I guess the big question is: if swearing is a problem, why hasn't it been banned completely on the forum? Well, it was always supposed to be a pop forum for grownups (or people who act like grownups). I suppose I didn't want to impose that sort of censorship on a group of adults. I'm not sure if that ideal scenario stands any more, but I would like to think that there is some middle ground between a blanket ban on swearing and users crying and screaming that they should be allowed to call Leona Lewis a cunt five times an hour for the rest of their lives.

    Those were the days!!!

I'm 100% against a swearing ban but the whole Jessie J thing has got completely out of hand and is bewildering in it's pervasiveness and intensity.

I mean if someone's name was going to be used in this way it could at least have been saved for will.i.am.

Check you lipstick before you come and talk to me.............. Let's go Zi Lin!!!

A silly question it maybe be as I haven't been active in over 6 months, but I just want to get something clear regarding the rule against derogatory slurs against women. What if I'm quoting an artist or lyric? Will I never be able to quote dear Nicki Minaj again?

As far as I know quotes are okay. But of course not if you don't use them as an actual quote, but to still call someone the b-word 'in the legendary words of...'

Okay thanks! I don't do name calling on here much but I do enjoy spurting out a lyric in reference to something from time to time (and it'll usually include that lovely word). *crosses fingers* Here's to getting it right!

Could someone provide a working link to the forum rules?

I just posted a thread and I wrote some nice things and it started good and then I received backlash and horrible comments, not one of them was good and my thread was closed. most of the comments were from fans from the artist I was talking about and they rubbed their noses on me. Makes me now intimidated to even talk to the fans of this artist.

There's a basic set of rules that seems to have been written by vBulletin here:
    http://www.popjustice.com/forum/misc.php?do=showrules

And an even simpler PJ version here:
    http://www.popjustice.com/the-rules/

(Edit. As of today, February 27, 2013, those two links lead to the same full set of rules.)
