I am interested in knowing what people think about this year''s short-list as a whole. Frankly, I think (and not at the blame of PJ) but this is the most bland and boring list this year. We already know who the winner is (Something kinda, predictable?) and compared to the last two year''s award, this is the most sad year in UK Pop Music. There will be no popjustice 20 Quid remix song this year, I take it. With such snores as Rehab and Yeah Yeah.

I have to say the only songs I thought deserved to be on the shortlist (which I will discuss on the omitions page more) Were "Love me Or Hate me" and "Alfie".

Has this year in UK Pop really been that horrible? I say, let''s bring back Rachel, bring back Goldfrapp, and lets have a year to actually talk about in 2008.

I adore Love Me Or Hate Me, it''s possibly the only song that I''ve heard remixed a billion times and sounds good in all of them. Bring Back Goldfrapp! Leave Rachel in the dumper though, she''s not a friend of mine.

The list is okay considering it has to do the best with what we Brits have got. I would remove a few songs from it. Rehab will win I think. Then the Amy Winehouse backlash can begin, it''s already starting I think.
Annie, if you're reading this...please know that I want your EP right now!

I never seem to like the people on this list except the blatant ones.

And yeah, its obvious SKO will win, but thats because its the best song for about 5 years. You can blame Girls Aloud for being amazing.
Been there, done that, t-shirt didn't fit.

I hate to say it but I actually disagree with you completely. I think this year''s shortlist is one of the strongest there''s ever been. I''d maybe thrown in Unklejam over Robbie but other than that the list is pretty flawless.

This year of pop has awakened me more than ever to the fact that we don''t need Rachel. And regardless of the point, Siobhan''s song is basically a Rachel Stevens song sung a lot better. Why have water when you can have sparkly, sugary cocktails? That''''s the best metaphor I can think of right now.

It could be argued that ''Rehab'' is a bit indie, but in truth, it''''s more pop fronting as indie than visa versa. It''s undeniably brilliant and undeniably pop (the "no, no, no" chorus). The fact that she''s nominated for the 20 Quid and the Mercury isn''t hypocrisy - Winehouse is just that damn good.

Last year ''Beware Of The Dog'', ''Catch You'' or ''Shine'' would''ve won. Easily. OK, they may not have topped ''Biology'' but they''d''ve put up one hell of a fight.

The fact that this year most of the songs have been large hits shows that nowadays ''pop'' stretches further than Girls Aloud and Rachel Stevens. Perhaps the problem is that for the first time in years pop is actually popular. We have nothing to rebel against etc. Pop is all encompassing and has taken on and bested every sub-genre that''s worth besting (Bodyrox - new rave, Rehab - indie, Foundations - schmindie, Calvin Harris - dance, Shine -R&B...)

    as i see it:

There is one song that is shit.
    A couple that are ok/interesting.
And the rest range from ''great'' to ''mindblowing''.
Never has there been so many songs that i appreciate in a list made by someone other than me.
    The least is great!

Usually I find it''s the single after the one in the shortlist that I like the most. Sophie Ellis Bextor - Me + My Imagination, Amy Winehouse - I''m No Good. For example. Take that''s Shine was fine though and Acceptable in the 80s but I liked neither of those as much as the ones I previously mentioned.
Through times of joy and suffering the music flavours everything is all I know now.
