I thought Sugababes vs. Atomic Kitten was the early Sugababes vs. Girls Aloud. When Atomic Kitten fell apart I guess the public needed something else to compare Sugababes with.
Not really sure if this is correct though.
I think Atomic Kitten and 2.0 Sugababes made a few catty remarks about each other over the years but usually it was Keisha/Mutya or Jenny/Natasha mouthing off from what I remember, never Heidi or Liz, which is interesting when you consider Heidi and Liz used to be bandmates.. Atomic Kitten fell off the radar, Girls Aloud became the phenomenal success they are today and I think comparisons between the two were just because they're girlbands, I wasn't ever aware of a rivalry between them.
Did Atomic Kitten just not make a big impact though? I don't hear anyone excited about an AK reunion.
Tide was too high, they didn't hold on.
From what I recall the whole thing started with Atomic Kitten making some catty remark about someone in the Sugababes team backstage at some big event (Party in the Park, perhaps? I don't recall.) and Mutya and Keisha didn't take it too kindly. I recall one interview where they spotted Jenny Frost on the street and I think it was Keisha who "jokingly" suggested that they should run her over, while Mutya smacked her lips, rolled her eyes and commented that they don't like Atomic Kitten too much.
However, overall Atomic Kitten was just far too disposable to be significant in the long run. They sold and worked well at the time, but by the time they called it quits they were already declining.
Leaving out hideous expressions like 'Kelendria' (who even is that?) would be a good start. - Someboy re: Kelly Rowland's birth name
I used to love Atomic Kitten. Whole Again was my anthem, aged 12.
They were never superstars in the way Girls Aloud are or effortlessly cool in the way the Sugababes used to be. I could be wrong but I don't really remember them ever having an adult fan base as the other 2 do and while I stanned for Atomic Kitten back in the day, I can't see me now - being in my mid-20's - going back and listening to Right Now the way I do Sound of the Underground or One Touch. I think when making a comeback your songs have to appeal to the adults your fans now are... and not just because it's nostalgia.

I think Atomic Kitten will comeback at some point, maybe even next year. There's too many girlbands planning launch/relaunch for fall 2012/early 2013 so they're did a good decision with cancelling the reunion for now.
Atomic Kitten worked well in the context of the early 2000s pop scene - the problem is that they never really brought a lot to the table. They were kind of the Jane Doe of girl groups - they had hits, but ultimately they were kind of anonymous and never had a strong sense of identity that Sugababes, Bananarama or even Steps had/has.
Ironically, if they had actually gone with their original Hi-NRG manga concept they might've actually been more relevant today due to the Asian/K-Pop wave.

Todays girlgroups are mostly trying to be cool or hot/sexy (or both) while Atomic Kitten always were a bubblegum pop act with sweet and light sound. There is no girlbands or even many solo artist with such sounds these days so if they will try again with this style they might find their public.
Atomic Kitten did well with Jenny Frost, their big mistake was ending it when they did, like Girls Aloud several years later they went on a break or hiatus at the wrong time.
I don't think it was a mistake to end it when they did - on the contrary; they were already declining by then and the group actually came to a natural and undramatic end.

I wouldn't mind Atomic Kitten coming back. They were fun back in the day. Kerry Katona DOES NOT need to be involved though.
I love their moody Round Round
Yet, their greatest hits album sold half of that.
I didn't say they were flopping - just that they were already on the decline and I doubt they could've turned it around. They were just an act that slotted in nicely at the time, but by the time they called it quits they were already feeling horribly outdated. I really don't see any room for them on today's pop scene at all.

The only Atomic Kitten track you really need is Be With You. Whole Again has a certain status in pop history, I suppose. The rest of their output was utter drivel.
EDIT: Actually, that's not true. They were quite fun before Kerry left, then Whole Again just about saved their career so they released a slew of clones of it and lost everything that made them interesting.

Be With You and If You Come To Me. The rest is unnecessary.
Thanks Benevenstanciano.
