I'm quite glad TV stations are removing "ranking system" from music shows.SBS‘s ‘Inkigayo‘ has decided to abolish its rank and award system.
Beginning on July 15th, ‘Inkigayo’ will be removing its Take 7, where the seven of the most popular artists from that week are featured, and the Mutizen Song award.
A producer of the show explained to Newsen through a phone call stating, “We believe that rather than the ranking system, the most important thing is the genre K-Pop being recognized worldwide. Therefore, we have decided to abolish the system after much discussion. There’s really no meaning behind a ranking system. We have decided to undergo this change in hopes that viewers can just enjoy the music.”
“There are a lot of K-Pop stars in the music industry that have talent. We wanted to break free from the repetitive system, in which artists release new songs and perform, so we plan on redesiging our system by having the concept of more special stages . For viewers to enjoy the music, we will have more collaboration stages and much more.”
With ‘Inkigayo’ following MBC‘s ‘Music Core‘ of becoming an awardless program, KBS‘s ‘Music Bank‘ remains as the only music program from the three major broadcasting stations with the awarding system.
Brilliant. I was just talking the other day about how the industry needs change. And yes to special stages!
I wonder if Music Bank and M! Countdown will follow suit. (I highly doubt the latter will, due to its name).
Though Oricon you might be out of a job soon haha.
I cannot see Music Bank removing their award system and I personally am a fan of it (although I'm not too fussed on the merit of the award itself). I just like the artist winning and seeing their massive shock/breakdown and go "AWWW".
I'll probably replace Inkigayo with Music Champion then on the OP so my job is still running smoothly to some extent hehe.
Last week's Music Bank was won by Jo Kwon's I'm Da One featuring Zion.T.
Super Junior wins M!Countdown this week with Sexy, Free & Single

I'm all for no fan votes, but I can't see this changing much...Music program ‘M! Countdown‘ will be making changes to its ranking system.
Jung Yoo Jin PD, who is in charge of setting the direction for ‘M Countdown’ on Mnet, announced on August 28th, “We are reorganizing how the rankings are made to better fit the changing music trend and also to have the public [agree] with the chart,” explaining why they decided to change the way rankings are made.
Ahead of the change in rankings, on August 22nd, the Korean Musicians Association, Korean Entertainment Production Association, KMP Holdings, and many others involved in the entertainment industry were invited to inform them how the new ranking system will work.
Han Dong Chul, the director of Mnet, revealed, “‘M Countdown’ strives for fairness, and to raise the equality level, we decided to change up our ranking system. We are holding this meeting to see what the opinions of the experts in the industry are before we make any changes to the rankings.”
During the meeting, those gathered agreed that there is a need for music program rankings that mirror the hot issues and most recent trends in the music scene. They also agreed that music programs should be a stepping stone for rookie singers to build up their skills, so that they can carry on the hallyu wave and grow as K-pop artists. Regarding international fans, they stated that the easiest way for them to get into K-pop is by looking at ranking charts, so there is a need for music programs with rankings.
Mnet staff members agreed to try and follow theses suggestions and other ideas coming from the meeting. The general consensus was that the rankings will raise the importance and percentage of music sales, downloads, and plays, and decrease the importance and percentage of fan votes. In exchange for decreasing the weight of fan votes, a research study of the reactions of those ranging from ages 15-39 will be held.
Director Han Dong Chul said, “We will work hard to make a fair chart that reflects the music trend as well as the hard work of producers and artists alike,” revealing his future plans.
Starting with the last week in August, ‘M Countdown’ will start using the new ranking system. Another change is that rather than narrowing down the winner from three finalists, only two finalists will go head to head.
Along with the change in the ranking system at ‘M Countdown’, F.T. Island’s Hongki has replaced Tony An as the new MC.
Good idea. Less crap like Super Junior winning just because of huge fan votes.
Yes! She had to win at least once!
I wish Orange Caramel win something! They deserve to!
你以为你想死, 其实,你只是想要被别人拯救。
Not sure I understand Music Bank's methodology. So PSY wins for the 12 time with Gangnam Style today. Nine times in a row, tying Gee. Now 12 wins.. he's not selling much at all right now, he's not performing, and while I'm sure he's got a fan club he's not really the type to get sustained frenziedd fan girl votes.
The score which makes him landslide all other songs is the category of "Broadcast points" which is the third score I think. Everytime Gangnam Style gets mentioned in the news or media and how he performed at the states and how it's #2 on billboard and blah blah blah, it gets him points hence why he's able to win so many weeks.
