Wow at Celine having 3 albums in top 25 of the 90's. Well deserved love her!
God Celine Dion. Bane of my adolescence that woman. Every fecking Sunday I'd be exposed to her yelpings by a mother who insisted on playing her dreck whilst ironing (which lasted all bastarding afternoon, I might add). No wonder I was so depressed as a youngster!!!!!
So you like show tunes? That doesn't mean you're gay. It just means you're AWFUL!!!
From 50-21,there are only 3 that I haven't had at some stage (no guesses as to what one of those is...clue: I can't stand Opera). Again, not many of those actually still remain in my collection. Dangerous has always been my goto Michael Jackson album, and it's been an eternal annoyance that so many of its best tracks were overlooked as singles. If I'd been Sony CEO, there would have been no faffing around with Jam, In The Closet, Gone Too Soon or Will You Be There.....you've got She Drives Me Wild, Can't Let Her Get Away, Keep The Faith and the title song for god's sake!

20. CARRY ON UP THE CHARTS- THE BEST OF THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH- The Beautiful South (1,910,000)
RELEASED: 7th November 1994
PEAK POSITION: 1
WKS IN TOP 75: 89
SINGLES RELEASED:
ONE LAST LOVE SONG (14)
The Success of “Carry On Up The Charts” surprised many over the festive period 1994. The album didn’t debut at No 1, there was no sensational instant sales, no million selling single to promote it (indeed the single released performed only middlingly) and yet slowly but surely ascended to the No 1 spot spending 7 weeks at No 1 over xmas/ new year and generating just shy of a million copies by the end of 94 becoming the second biggest seller of the year to Bon Jovi’s “Crossroad- The Best Of” which is at 31 on this list.
It seemed that the Beautiful South were another of those acts who made good songs but wouldn’t really make you want to buy a studio album, but a best of- well that was a different story. The new found appreciation for the band set them up for the remainder of the decade and their next album 1996’s “Blue Is the Colour” would also top the million mark (it’s at 45 on this survey) but the only way was down for them.......
19. LET'S TALK ABOUT LOVE- Celine Dion (1,920,000)
RELEASED: 17th November 1997
PEAK POSITION: 1
WKS IN TOP 75: 62
SINGLES RELEASED:
MY HEART WILL GO ON (1)
TELL HIM (3)
IMMORTALITY (5)
THE REASON (11)
TREAT HER LIKE A LADY (29)
It’s Celine Again, this time with 1997’s “Let’s Talk About Love” the xmas chart topper for that year, yet despite that it actually sold more copies in 1998! This was mainly thanks to THAT soundtrack and the hit “My Heart Will Go On” which propelled the album back to the top spot in March 98. The album fell short of the million mark in both calendar years but sold so consistently that ended both 97 and 98 in the top 10 best sellers of those years...
18. OLDER- George Michael (1,940,000)
RELEASED: 13th May 1996
PEAK POSITION: 1
WKS IN TOP 75: 99
SINGLES RELEASED:
JESUS TO A CHILD (1)
FASTLOVE (1)
SPINNING THE WHEEL (2)
STAR PEOPLE '97 (2)
YOU HAVE BEEN LOVED/ THE STRANGEST THING '97 (2)
OLDER (3)
Post litigation, “Older” was intended as a statement to prove the new more mature Michael was back and meant business. Released in May 1996 it was preceded by the No 1 singles “Jesus To A Child” and “Fastlove” and hurtled to the top on sales of 281k in it’s debut week. A record breaking 6 top 3 hits were taken from the album which enabled it to remain in the top 20 for a pretty impressive 40 weeks from debut.
It remains Michael’s biggest selling studio album ever in this country, and whilst it’s an album steeped in it’s own seriousness and melancholy it’s a rewarding listen in my opinion, though party tunes are hard to come by on it.....
17. LADIES & GENTLEMEN- THE BEST OF GEORGE MICHAEL- George Michael (1,980,000)
RELEASED: 9th November 1998
PEAK POSITION: 1
WKS IN TOP 75: 56
SINGLES RELEASED:
OUTSIDE (2)
AS (4)
Whilst here’s his best selling compilation! After Michael’s somewhat enforced outing, the public decided to show it’s support by propelling “Ladies & Gentlemen” to No 1 for 8 straight weeks over xmas/ new year 1998 making it the second biggest seller of that year. Only two singles were released to promote it “Outside” and “As” which both made the top 5, but “Outside” was probably the first track Michael had made aimed directly at the dance floor since his Wham! Days and was a welcome change after the “Older” project.
Whilst the UK showed its support the revelation virtually killed of his US career where he had previously garnered 10 US No 1’s (including Wham! Tracks) but has not made the top 10 since 1996’s “Fastlove”.
Despite rumours and suggestions Michael insisted that the title of his best of was not a reference to toilets......

Love My Heart Will Go. I don't listen to much of the other songs on there though.
I remember having the cassette and playing Treat Her Like A Lady all the time. I think it's the only Celine album I don't have on my iTunes though... why?!
Wasn't 'Too funky' a track aimed at the dancefloor? And 'I want your sex'? 'Fastlove' at a push too.
Oh, I thought Ladies & Gentlemen sold way more than Older!
I find Older a bit one-paced, but it does have some gorgeous tracks. Spinning The Wheel and Older itself are probably my favourites. L&G suffers from the "ballad" and "uptempo" separate discs. And there were a lot of omissions and not many 7" edits.

16. SIMPLY THE BEST- Tina Turner (2,000,000)
RELEASED: 30th September 1991
PEAK POSITION: 2
WKS IN TOP 75: 141
SINGLES RELEASED:
IT TAKES TWO (5)
WAY OF THE WORLD (13)
I WANT YOU NEAR ME (22)
NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS (90S VERSION) (23)
LOVE THING (29)
Tina Turner’s best of is not only the 5th highest placed by a female solo artist, but it’s also the highest selling album of the decade not to make No 1. Three times it rose to hit No 2 (Oct & Nov 91 and Jan 92) and on each occasion it could not displace Simply Red’s “Stars”. Turner’s career had virtually gone stellar since she released her first solo project “Private Dancer” in 1983 with every album shifting millions worldwide including in the states.
She does however remain a name ominously missing from the list of acts with a No 1 single, and for all her sales and fans in this country she had only mustered a solitary week at No 1 on the album charts (that coming courtesy of 1989’s “Foreign Affair”) and “Simply The Best” didn’t add to this tally. Things were slightly rectified by 1993’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It” in hitting No 1 but this remains her best selling album in this country as we hit the 2 million mark!....
15. AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE- R.E.M (2,010,000)
RELEASED: 28th September 1992
PEAK POSITION: 1
WKS IN TOP 75: 138
SINGLES RELEASED:
EVERYBODY HURTS (7)
DRIVE (11)
THE SIDEWINDER SLEEPS TONIGHT (17)
MAN ON THE MOON (18)
NIGHTSWIMMING (27)
FIND THE RIVER (54)
“Automatic For The People” marks the point that REM became the biggest band in the UK certainly during 1993. Six singles were released to promote it the biggest being of course “Everybody Hurts” (no 7 in May 93), and helped to return the album to the No 1 spot in April of that year for the first time since its Oct 92 release. It ended 1993 as the second biggest seller behind Meat Loaf but as we can see in terms of decade sales it managed to surpass even that mighty album.
Whilst George Michael’s consecutive run in the top 20 albums of 40 weeks is impressive, REM actually did far better spending the first 55 weeks of its chart life within the top 20....
14. I'VE BEEN EXPECTING YOU- Robbie Williams (2,090,000)
RELEASED: 26th October 1998
PEAK POSITION: 1
WKS IN TOP 75: 62
SINGLES RELEASED:
MILLENNIUM (1)
SHE'S THE ONE (1)
NO REGRETS (4)
STRONG (4)
Buoyed on by the eventual success of “Life Thru A Lens” Williams’ second album was a much more instant winner. It debuted atop of the charts in Nov 98 on sales of 131k (enough to deprive REM of a chart topper with “Up”) and became home to 4 top 5 hits including the No 1 singles “Millennium” and “She’s the One”, the album not only finished both 1998 and 1999 in the top 10 best sellers of those years but also cleared a million in both years joining a very selective group indeed.
The album was also the second in a run of 6 million selling studio albums for Williams extending from his debut in 97 through to 2005’s “Intensive Care” denoting him as the leading artist for album sales throughout the first half of the noughties....
13. THE VERY BEST OF ELTON JOHN- Elton John (2,100,000)
RELEASED: 29th October 1990
PEAK POSITION: 1
WKS IN TOP 75: 97
SINGLES RELEASED:
YOU GOTTA LOVE SOMEONE (33)
EASIER TO WALK AWAY (63)
This wasn’t the first greatest hits set Elton released but it is certainly his biggest selling one! After a dip in popularity for Elton throughout the second half of the 80s where only “Nikita” and “Candle In The Wind (Live)” could make the top 10, there was a reappraisal of John’s career in the early 90’s. In part this was caused by him finally getting his first solo chart topper with Sacrifice/ Healing Hands” in Jun 90 and it’s parent album “Sleeping With The Past” also becoming his first UK Chart topping album since 1974.
By that Christmas we were all ready for a new best of, and my, how it took off. After debuting at No 1 and spending 2 weeks there the album also spent 9 weeks at No 2 all of them behind Madonna’s “Immaculate Collection” through the xmas/ new year period 1990, ending that year as the fourth biggest seller.
Sales continued consistently through the decade and on this survey this is placed as THE biggest seller of the decade by a male solo artist, narrowly triumphing over Robbie Williams....
I had planned on using this thread as a prompt to bulk up my CD collection with a few 90s classics but.....
....sweet jesus what a HIDEOUS decade. I really can live without ever listening to a whole album by Lighthouse Family, All Saints, Robson & Jerome, Beautiful South, Fugees, Jamiroquai, M People. It was truly the blandest decade ever.
I hate the criticism for Michael Jackson's HIStory. It's without a doubt, his most emotional and passionate work. You can hear the anger on 'They Don't Care About Us' and the feelings of desolate loneliness on 'Stranger in Moscow' ("Here abandoned in my fame, Armageddon of the brain" is still one of my favourite pop lyrics").
I feel like Mariah can't win with a lot of people either. The amount of people who found her early work syrupy and dull, is matched by the number of people who want a return to the glory days of 'Music Box' and for her to abandon r'n'b. I can't cope with people who call her a 'sell-out', post-Daydream too. Mariah is a lifetime lover of hip-hop, rap and r'n'b, so her moving her songs in that direction is arguably her becoming truer to herself, and not in fact 'selling out'.
Mariah has "won" a grand total of twice with my ears: All I Want For Christmas Is You and Always Be My Baby. I pretty much dislike everything else by her.
So you like show tunes? That doesn't mean you're gay. It just means you're AWFUL!!!
So we're almost at the top 10. I can guess a few of those still to come, but there are loads I still can't think of. Hmmmm!
It's = it is/it has. Its = its.
