To be fair to the Daily Mail, any female popstar featured in a broadsheet newspaper usually get the shit ripped out of them.

See the interview with Cheryl Cole in the Observer on Sunday (http://www.guardian.co.uk/theobserve...en?INTCMP=SRCH)

Alexandra gets no more flack than most female popstars...

Just off the top of my head...

Britney Spears - she's had a whole host of shit thrown in her direction ever since the beginning. Accused of being too cheesy, and then accused of being too overtly sexual. Finally the abuse has settled on teasing her because she had a mental breakdown. It makes me feel slightly sick that people rip her to shreds, when they wouldn't be so nasty should she have suffered a chronic illness anywhere other than her mind.

Lady Gaga - I didn't really want to have to bring her up (although I've been branded a "Little Monster" so often now that I've learned to just roll my eyes and not give a shit), but the amount of abuse thrown at her is pretty much unparalleled. If you visit ANY entertainment news website that allows for the public to post comments, there is usually about an 85/15 split against her favour. Some people speak as though they loathe her with every single ounce of their being (they obviously don't, but they really go in for the kill).

These two alone garner much more hate and despicable comments than any black pop star I can think of. A case in point that the hate that Alexandra experiences has fuck all to do with race.

Yes but while they get hate they are worldwide renowned bonafide megastars of pop. Alex is not very popular (kills me to type that) yet gets a lot of hate so it sort of doesn't balance out or make sense.

I linked the video of her singing Jar of Hearts yesterday and my friend wrote "I HATE HER!!", I asked why because this topic was fresh in mind and she said her facial expressions annoy her/she's a wreck head and cocky BUT she does like some of her songs.

Confusion, no? Where are people getting this stuff from, I linked her an interview or two then saying she wasn't etc but she never replied to that so who knows..

They are totally ridiculous comparisons and for about the 10th time nobody has said that people hate alex because she's black. It is much more subtle than that and the fact that people would rather dismiss the idea out of hand, rather than take a few minutes to ponder the finer points that are being made here, is quite typical of the problem

I think it's because she has the voice, the look, the confidence, the songs, and still does shit. It's embarrassing to be associated with her. It's kind of like the Saturdays, but they seem genuinely happy with their performance, whereas I feel like Alexandra seems really bitter, like she should be a worldwide 'British Beyonce' by now.

And racist comments are ridiculous when on every talent show in the UK there have always been a far greater percentage of black contestants compared to the UK population.

I think you can't ignore race when it comes to the attitudes towards popstars. Though it isn't so much down to 'racism' more commercialism.

The fact is the media will go out of their way to promote pretty young white girls because pretty young white girls are their meal ticket. Young white girls buy a lot of shit and the media make money from advertisers who want pretty young white girls to buy their shit. And the way to get young white girls to buy shit is to have a famous pretty young white girl advertising it.

Someone mentioned Jesse J being arrogant, she can be as arrogant as she likes. It doesn't matter because there are 1000 pubications and radio shows telling you this is a girl you want to be. Why do they do that? Because the advertisers who pay them lots of money like that... because then they have a face to sell you lipstick.

There is zero incentive in the UK for the media to support a black popstar because (unlike the US) there is too small a demographic for them to sell hair care products to.

I don't think Alexandra has any more 'hate' aimed towards them than any big UK popette ie Cheryl, Jessie J, Pixie Lott. The only difference is she doesn't have the media continuously and subconciously countering the 'negatives' with every other tabloid page telling you this is who you HAVE to aspire to be.

This is 100% correct but doesn't explain why the everyone loves black US female artists but won't support UK ones. Bit too close to home maybe, we don't want to home grown ethnics getting above themselves do we !!

It's not a distinction I've thought about before, but that might be it mump boy. While they can be safely categorised as Other, we ('we') can deal with them, but once they start to challenge such distinctions they become too much of a threat to our definitions of identity.

(Clearly, this might actually be nonsense, as I've only just woken up and have not yet had a cup of tea, but it seems to make sense to me now at least).

The problem with the Burke is that she was supposed to be the replacement in Eternal for Kelle Bryan in 2000 but was only about 13 years old at the time so couldnt be. She would have fitted in really well back in the time when Lutricia McNeal and Shola Ama were rocking the stage. Just born a decade too late poor girl.
I quite like her. The voice is very very good, better than Leona I think. But she is about as cool as a badgers butt hole and needs to accept that and embrace that. I wanted JLS to win the Xfactor and I didnt even like them. But then when she released Bad Boys I got excited as that is an absolute tune! But then she released Broken Heels, which could have been amazing were it not for the fact that she starts the song by provoking Red One and teasing him in the most childish manner. Noone likes someone to tease Red One. And noone should be talking at the start of a song when clearly it is time to randomly shout "Reeeeed Ooonnnne!!!!!!" like in all songs

But that theory can be easily disproven. Using myself as an example - I adored Misha B during her stint on X Factor and thought the attitude twist towards her was ridiculous. Yet, I still find Ms Burke quite annoying.

I don't think you're getting the point. You're trying to localize and individualize the argument and also then finding it sad that people are being accused of racism, which isn't happening either and shows you trying to tackle this on a local level. The issue is the subconscious and internalized thoughts and overall mentality a society has been fed to think about a certain minority or another.
"She's the next Madonna, but better" - Katy Perry when meeting Lady Gaga.

  13. #138
But I'm localising it to prove a point that it's impossible to make blanket statements about such an issue. If that makes sense.
    "Spit ya fluidest, Bitch..."

But no one is maklng a 'blanket statement'.

People are getting extremely defensive and immediately declaring that none of this is true because they personally are not racist and thereby completely missing the point. No one is being accused of being personally racist.

There are plenty of reasons that people may dislike Alexandra Burke none of them to do with her race, but the level of vitriol and the petty excuses given for it hint at something deeper.

British society undoubtedly has a problem with black women (The women part being just, if not more, important than the black) and specifically black British women. Refusing to accept this simply because you don't think it applies to you doesn't mean that the problem isn't real.

I used to love Alexandra and really wanted her to win X Factor. Then she released a string of mediocre songs and revealed herself to be a bit of a knob. I now think....she's a bit of a knob!

I'm not sure about the whole racism thing. It may play a part in her treatment in the media but I think the pudding is being somewhat over-egged.
So you like show tunes? That doesn't mean you're gay. It just means you're AWFUL!!!

The English in general are an insecure bunch. It is incredible that some people still have insecurity issues regarding confident, extrovert women who have an opinion.
Jessie J has also been getting alot of negative press for being a diva, loud, full of herself. Thats just the way things are here, you are expected to know your place.

How is she a knob though? Like any stand out interviews or whatever?

The US has always had a big thing about blacks. There are a lot of them and so they have their own community etc. That isn't there in the UK, ie MOBOs being called racist when they aren't and are there to give black artists credit.

Did this all start because of the X Factor judging spot?

I don't live in the UK anymore so I don't know exactly how her image is there at the moment, but how could she go from arguably the #1 pop star in the UK during 2009/2010 with smash after smash.....to not even being able to get a spot on Chatty Man, blacklisted by every major radio station, hated in the media? What happened? It's not like "Elephant" flopped either, #3 is pretty respectable, why didn't they release the album right after it and get some major promo off the back of that song's success? Does her own management hate her too?
There is only one Queen of Pop, and she does not share power!
