I think (and I've probably said this on here before) the problem is that the word 'racism' is so emotionally provocative that it stops there being any meaningful discussion or change in the people who are supposedly being racist. The thing is, there is a lot of racism in this country. It's endemic. Very, very little of it is malicious nowadays, but it's there: black boys persistently underachieve at school, black pupils are about eight times less likely to be on 'Gifted and Talented' programmes, ethnic minorities are under represented at top universities. These things aren't accidental, and they can't be explained away by culture.
It's great that black and minority ethnic people can and do succeed, but a few black singers topping the charts isn't 'job done'. I'd elaborate on this if it wasn't 2am...
(This post wasn't aimed specifically at you, but it made sense as a reply to yours!)
Sixty-nine is the only dinner for two.
I think most of the hate for her is racially motivated, and it's not her fault...it's the haters fault. I feel like she's a perfectly fine 'popstar' and the reasons people list as to why they 'hate' her are feeble at best.
Ha! I can say I have a considerable amount of respect for TeenIdle, that's a brilliant post.
And Itty - racism is not dead, in any of its branches - discrimination, stereotypes, etc. There are people worldwide presented with so few images of people from a multitude of different origins, that they create such narrow interpretations of what color could and should be.
To think that these kind of mindsets and perspectives are completely nonexistent amongst our forum members and the music-buying public is rather absurd in my most humble opinion.
"I do not care about critics, too, I care for my ears basically." - vas
Who accused anyone of being an individual racist?
It is important though to recognize how racism is ingrained into the UK's culture and media, and how that internalizes into the public's mindset. Racism still exists and society is generations away from having a chance of there being people who will not have to worry about being judged at some time in their life for the color of their skin.
In hindsight, you can't fix the problem if it's never addressed, and to deny that severe negative reaction to Alexandra is anything but racism by a large bit is pushing attention away from dealing with the real issue of people's mentality towards those of color. Hell, if you Youtube Alexandra's winning, issues of race can be found discussed on the fist page of comments, with some obvious hateful comments about her skin color.

I have a really intense dislike of Jessie J, and I can't really explain it beyond the fact I feel she espouses everything that's wrong with pop culture now. She's white, so there's no (subconscious) racism at play, and it's true that people can form a very negative attitude towards popstars for trivial reasons or things that are fairly superficial (ie you think they're crap). I get the same thing with your Olly Murs' of this world, so it's not motivated by gender either.
Eric's Generic World: http://ericsgenericworld.blogspot.com/
Playing the race card is such a cheap and pathetic cop out. It has nothing to do with race, it has to do with her personality. She is cocky and obnoxious and those qualities are not desirable anywhere, not in the UK, not in the US, not anywhere. The public usually gravitates towards people who appear humble and don't think too highly of themselves.
Look at Beyonce, the perfect example of someone who is an extremely confident performer yet at the same time in interviews, and through her body language comes across as a humble, down to earth person.
When I look at Beyoncé I always see more media training than personality.
I definitely prefer someone being outspoken and spontaneous to them being extremely polite to an extent where they're clearly playing their role every single minute of the day.
You clearly seem very frustrated but It's understandable, it must be hard being an Alexandra fan these day. However, I made a perfectly valid and constructive post and there really is no need to resort to personal attacks. If you can't handle an opinion regarding your darling Alexandra then maybe participating in internet forum discussions isn't for you. Now get lost.
It must be a UK perception of "over confident" as Beyonce is seen as robotic, media-trained and personality-less by most US music listeners. Plus, the comparisons to two huge black female artists, Rihanna and Beyonce as seen by many throughout the thread, doesn't void any issues of race. Just because two women of color are successful doesn't mean that women of color don't face discrimination.
Issues of race discrimination boil down to the reality of a person of color doing the best they can at their job and still having to worry that what they produce is considered "not good enough" due to the color of their skin, which is not a reality for those who are white. At the end, if she is a singer, judge her then for her abilities - she's an arguably great singer, an arguably good dance, and can record great music. Yes, people hate artists for rather silly reasons, and those are usually directly influenced by internalized misogyny when at women, internalized racism when at people of color, and even internalized homophobia when there is even a perception of a male artist being gay or a female artist being a lesbian. For the most part, there is simply no validity behind "just not liking someone". It's illogical, so there must be something there, which must be addressed for progress to be made.

Hello everyone - if we could keep the personal insults and boring namecalling out of this, that would be great. There are some complex and interesting topics being discussed here with a pleasing level of self-restraint from most posters and it would be a shame to have to shut the thread.
Of course there are many reasons that an artist can be disliked but the vehemence against Alex is totally disproportionate to anything she has ever done wrong and any reasons people have ever articulated for their dislike, that it begins to look like something else is at play
Nobody is for one minute suggesting that people consciously think 'she black, therefore i don't like her' but i truly believe that her race does have an impact on how she's perceived and judged. It is pervasive throughout our society, the most obvious example is the negative way women of colour have ben portrayed (and have portrayed themselves on Big Brother practically every year).
A black woman who is confident is labelled, cocky or arrogant, if she's stands up for herself she's aggressive and if you can't think of anything else she's ugly or looks like a man.
The fact is that the UK record industry have absolutely no idea what to do with black women and you can count on 1 hand those that have had sustained careers (Gabrielle, Sade er) while there are absolutely loads that have false starts and gone nowhere once the industry grows bored. There is no plan, no A&R, no will to make anyone succeed. It is only with Emilie Sande that i can think of a black uk female who has had the same sustained push as Adele, Amy, Jesse,Ellie etc and please don't tell me that there is no one who can sing as well.
It's strange that there is a totally different standard when it comes to US acts, Beyonce, Rihanna etc can act however they like and we love them for it. But UK women have to know there place and no get above themselves.
I'm not suggesting this is the only factor in plat, I can fully understand that Alex hasn't always come across as well as she could in interviews etc but i've never seen any malice in it just excitement and eagerness and i've never once hear a decent reason for the venom that is spewed at her not only on message boards but from people at Radio 1 for example. It's an old cliche but she has to fight 10 times as hard to achieve what many other acts have given to them on a plate.
This era is a train wreck, i have no idea what they were thinking releasing a whole album of cheap sounding, auto tuned, dance music, a year too late. NOBODY buys albums by dance acts anyway. The record company and management are an omnishambles (why hasn't this airplay problem, whatever it is ,been sported by now) as always. In the middle we have Alex as usually rising above all the shit and performing her heart out, looking like the best popstar this country has ever had.
Rant over
Unfortunately it's not enough. She can't be mediocre or average in any way. And it pains me as a stan to say this, but she's going to learn. The HARD way.
I suppose a meaningful comparison might be Jessie J. She and Alex have similarly confident, overbearing personalities, both whip out lots of dodgy catchphrases, and both make mainstream pop music. Jessie J isn't vilified (in fact, despite the Popjustice hatred for her, she's often polled as people's favourite coach on the Voice). On the other hand, Alex's brief spell on the X Factor managed to attract nationwide outpourings of venom.
Interesting, no?
Sixty-nine is the only dinner for two.
Jessie is still in the first flush of fame and she made her name without the help of a reality tv show. Alex has been around a bit longer and has still not got any credibilty. Jessie J is equally as annoying to me.
Sixty-nine is the only dinner for two.
Being from X factor doesn't help though, it gives people an easy, lazy, form of attack, (Broken Heels and Start Without You don't help either).
I've even heard people say she can't sing !! which is mind boggling

It's weird, my friends were talking about her yesterday, saying the same thing as people here, that she is arrogant, annoying and they mocked her OK.com, but I just don't see it at all myself.

It annoys me that Cheryl Cole can do what she did on The Voice and get so much praise yet Alexandra busts her ass off and does at least twice the amount of performing and gets sweet fuck all.
Now I'm really not trying to pit artists together or start some off topic Cheryl drama but why even is that, it's ludicrous.
