Thread: The Primitives

Now back together, and have been for about 3 years, their 4th album (their first in 21 years!) is out today. Rhymes And Echoes features 14 charming indie-pop covers of mostly obscure female fronted 60s A-sides and it's pretty great! I always loved this band... any fans?

I'm trying to get some interest from Cherry Red with a view to releasing their other three studio albums, Lovely, Pure and Galore, in deluxe/expanded editions. There's been a tonne of best ofs/budget compilations over the years, but there's a chunk of material that's never made it onto CD. There's a bunch of remixes which were promo only, for example. I hope they put them out... 2012 is a good time to do it as the album is getting rave reviews and they're touring, too, so fingers crossed.

I'll definitely buy this. They put out a great little EP last year, 2 original tracks, 2 covers well worth downloading.

They're one of those 80s bands that I'd appreciate a lot more now than I did then. I've got the Best Of, but I never bought any of their albums in the late 80s, so something must have failed to click with me back then (I did like their type of music, because I have Darling Buds, Adult Net, Voice Of The Beehive etc).

I love(d) all the blond-pop bands of that era, but The Primitives were definitely the cream of the crop. They are too often dismissed as being one hit wonder with 'Crash', but almost all of their singles were just as genius. I think my favourite is Way Behind Me. It's just perfect.

Darling Buds were my fave from this era but Primitives had genuis moments too.

The Darling Buds ran out of steam really quickly. Pop Said is in my top 50 albums (The Primitives aren't, actually), but the follow up albums are really poor. They had a good clutch of singles, but the later ones weren't as good. The Primtives kept the great singles record for me and didn't release a duff one.

I thought both Crawdaddy and Erotica were both very enjoyable albums from the Darling Buds. All the singles are stellar.

It's odd that The Darling Buds are the only act of that era/genre not to get a budget best of... The Primitives had about 12, even Voice Of The Beehive and Transvision Vamp had a few, but no such release for The Buds. The Cherry Red reissue of Pop Said was decent, but a little singles round up would've been welcome.

Tidying up (well, updating) my 1988-1990 iTunes singles logs this week, I thought that exact thing. A collection with the Pop Said-era singles, plus the later ones that ended up in the 41-75 chart netherworld, would be great.
