Thread: Prometheus

It got 4/5 from Total Film, and I generally trust their opinion a lot.

I've been re-watching all the Alien films in anticipation.

I'm so disappointed by this. It could have been so good but it was just a mess.
There were some amazing scenes though, and it at least looked good.

But still, huge disappointment. (Even after knowing about the mixed reviews).

I thought it was good. Not great, though. Mainly because the whole creationism (or intelligent design like they call it) vs evolutionism issue was so obvious (and American). But Noomi was great and the operation scene was classic "Alien"!

I'm waiting for the sequel now.

    Europe got this already!?

Its really becoming pointless to be an American.

I'm going to have to wait a couple of weeks, but I noticed Empire gave it 3/5 and essentially said "looks great, awful script, poor characters". To be honest as long as the first one of those three holds up, I'm happy.
Replying with GIFs is like arguing with a tree - really boring.

Just got back from seeing this. Not a terrible film by any means, just not that good... And awfully generic. Not a patch on the first 2 Alien movies and lacking any original ideas or visuals. Most disappointing.

  7. #32
This is disappointing. I thought with such an amazing cast, writer and director this was a surefire classic. Or at least a temporary "This is brilliant and amazing oh wait not so much" classic a la Inception.

I hope it's at least tolerable when I see it.

And yes, the intelligent design vs. evolution argument is horribly American. Sometimes I wonder how this country can be so advanced in some ways and so horrifically archaic in others.

I enjoyed it, but it failed to live up to it's potential.

The opening scene is breathtaking, and there are similarly visually impressive scenes littered throughout the film, but there are some serious issues when it comes to the script and story. The main issue being that it provides more questions than answers. It doesn't work as a standalone film, so I hope it's not going to be a laborious wait for the sequel.

Avoid the 3D and save your money - it adds nothing decent.

The film looks amazing and was tense and scary at times, but it was just pointless. A long drawn out question and not the answer anyone really wanted. I was just hoping an alien would crop up and begin trimming the crew roster... C'est la vie.

Just got back from it and I loved it. Really didn't care that it didn't answer the questions it asked. It wasn't like the ending was 'that's your lot' - there's clearly more to come, and I'm looking forward to it. David was a brilliant character, and I hope we get to learn a bit more about him next time. Noomi Repace was a bit of a let down (Milla Jovovich might have been a better choice), and Guy Pearce is very attractive.

The only misstep for me was having Fassbender play the old guy, too. It was terrible make-up, and looked ridiculous compared to the fantastic CGI. A slightly cheesy script I can handle, but out-and-out ridiculous casting I cannot.

EDIT: I am a fool. I thought Fassbender was playing Peter Weyland, but it was Guy Pearce. Makes even less sense. And my 'very attractive' comment needs attributing to Logan Marshall Green rather than Pearce. Yum.

The only scene he did without makeup was the one used for the promo campaign (taking place in 2023):

I guess he might appear in the sequel, in flashbacks or as an android...

Anybody know what year the original Alien was set in?

I came away both disappointed and impressed with the film, if that makes any sense.

I was disappointed that it seemed to ask more questions, whilst never really answering any of the original questions it set out to answer. For example, why was there drawings all across Earth; the 'invitation' so to speak. It never explained why they were left there, and without ruining anything for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, the beings that made them surely hadn't of needed to put them there? Just get in one of your ships and fly there.

The acting was brilliant, aside from a few blunders with some non-characters. Would've been nice for them to flesh out the two guys who get killed first, instead of them being generic 'they're so dead' pawns. I liked Noomi and Charlize, and Micheal was of course brilliant, as he always is.

I can't help but wonder if the film was just one big metaphor though. Scott set out to make a film about answering the questions of our beginning and the morality of humanity going out to find our beginnings. Instead, we got a film that just asked even bigger questions of our existence, so nothing really came of it in the end. A parallel humanity's insatiable thirst to answer the biggest questions in the universe?

2122. Ripley is born in 2092 and Prometheus arrives destination in 2093.

I thought it was good but having Guy Pearce play Mr Weyland was an awful idea. His old man make up was rubbish. Him and David were basically Burns and Smithers, weren't they?

Also, the evolution of the alien life form is ridiculously complicated.

Ink blot worm things are kept in Thermos flasks, if they come into contact with some other wormy things that already live in the ground they turn into penis monsters, which shove themselves down your throat and possess you and make you crawl around with your legs draped over your shoulders. Alternatively if you ingest some of the ink blot stuff and have sex with someone they will shortly give birth to a starfish jellyfish facehugger thing with several vaginas which then grows massive and lays it's eggs in your throat and causes a wonky-looking Xenomorph to burst out of your chest. OK...

I wish they'd filmed the sequel with this back-to-back. If they leave it too long it could be rubbish.

I don't think it was quite as complicated as that: the containers had only the black goo in them, which transformed living creatures into more vicious shit. When exposed to it, the worms became aggressive penises, and that tattooed bloke became a fire-resistant fucker-up of shit.

That makes more sense. Just a bit, though.

Logan Marshall-Green is a fucking beast of a man. He looks chiseled out of marble.

SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't seen the movie yet, but why did David infect the hot guy?

I presume it was because he's just a robot. Weyland told him he needed to do better to find 'the makers' and I presume David thought by any means necessary. He wasn't aware what that would do and well, he's a robot with no conscience.

That's my guess anyway. A lot of actions weren't really explained.

I think the demise of Meredith vickers was a huge mistake.

Also I'd have rather had one three hour epic than have this delivered in 2/3 parts (if a second part even gets done by Scott - has he confirmed a sequel?) I think we waited long enough for this to just be handed more questions. I feel slightly cheated but I did still love it. Too many characters tho. There was no room for background distraction For multiple characters with two r three lines. I'd have rather gotten more depth to the main characters

I really think I did myself a favor by reminding myself on the way to the theater that Damon Lindelof wrote the script; six seasons of LOST really prepared me for open endings. (And ambiguous character development, odd plot developments, and people doing nonsensical things when in peril.)

Ok, first, I had no problem with Noomi. I thought she was a great heroine, both nimble and strong, and she tackled the absurdities of the script with a real fervor. Oh, she's just had a cesarean, and now she's running for her life! And jumping! And carrying an axe like she stumpled on to the set of the new Halloween movie! It was ridiculous, but I went with it because Noomi seems so invested.

I didn't like the killing of Vickers either, especially considering she seems like the type who would figure out if she ran to the left instead of straight forward, she would avoid getting smashed to smithereens by the giant alien ship. Between this film and Young Adult, I'm afraid if I ever run into Charlize I'm just going to wilt in fear of her tearing me down with a single ice-cold stare.

Noomi's boyfriend was annoying - can't say I was upset to see him go, but the question remains, why did David poison him? The ambivalent nature of David is baffling - we are told many times he cannot feel emotion, but his actions strongly suggest otherwise, especially his survival instinct, which is how he seems to relate to Shaw.

The creationist theology was really muddled, but then, I expected as much. I suppose if answers had been provided it would have been a great film rather than an enjoyable romp (and I do think it was fun - I'm shocked to see comments on other forums from people who say they were bored) and the enduring images of Noomi getting the cesarean and Fassbender discovering the map on the ship do feel like a real "blockbuster" moments to me.
    Meet your new stepmom, kid.

Saw it today, thought it was great. Then this article made it greater:

http://cavalorn.livejournal.com/584135.html (a long read, but worth it).

If you can't be bothered to read it then, essentially, it's all about the Bible. Jesus was an Engineer, we killed him, so they wanted to kill us.

I hated this movie. It was so frustrating to watch from the c-section and on. Nothing made sense and the characters were just running around while odd events happened to them. A complete disappointment. We need a prequel and a sequel to understand what was going on.

Fassbender did an amazing job. Completely creepy and for once his ugliness improved the movie as opposed to distracting me like other films I have seen him in.
