Brilliant. I look forward to that!

I love "Into the Groove". Can't believe it was never released as a single in America!

Into the Groove is Madonna third best behind Open Your heart and Like A Prayer.

So top 3 time, and 2 of them are artists with 1 song only in the top 200. Of those 2, Streisand here is by far the most famous. This is part of the Bee Gees penned massive hits for females of the 80s, with Dionne at #25 and Diane at #14. Strangely looking at Streisand's discography, it's one of only 2 top 10 solo hits, the other being Evergreen in 1977.

    Classic song.

Jennifer Rush must win this! Not sure who the other person will be though.

Babs is probably my most played artist of the year so far. I'm kinda obsessed with her at the moment.

Considering going to NYC in October to see her live!!! Only shit tickets left though and I know what Im like if I have bad seats. I sulk.

Total goddess who can do no wrong in my eyes.

I've played this almost every day for the last 2 months.......

Selling nigh on a million (and very possibly passing it since), this was the theme to the 1980 movie of the same name, and became a hit here following the arrival of the hugely popular TV series 2 years later. Irene Cara only had 2 UK hits- both of which came from films

So all that of course means-

    1. The Power Of Love by JENNIFER RUSH

    Year 1985
UK peak #1 for 5 weeks
    Sales 1,168,000

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ESMt4rnn3c

Yes, the ultimate power ballad. This took an incredible 16 weeks to make the pole position in the UK and largely has Liverpool to thank for playing it and gathering national interest. It spent 13 weeks moving up and down within 41-100, and at that point was the longest time a single had taken to reach the top spot in the UK and remained so until Celine Dion's Think Twice in 1995. Celine Dion of course covered the song in 1994.

Follow up single Ring Of Ice peaked at #14 and then poor Jennifer never troubled the UK top 40 again.

    Have loved this countdown! Thankyou.

Wow, Jennifer Rush sold loads! Love that song and am a big fan of hers. Such a shame she didn't have a bigger career here. Her back catalogue is great. You should check out her most recent album "Now Is the Hour". It's brilliant!

    AMAZING!!!

Had no idea this sold so well. Irene Cara really is a strange one. She has 2 of the biggest, most iconic hits of the decade, won an Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe and was all set to be a huge singing and acting superstar and yet it never happened. She disappeared off the face of the earth.

What's the correct position for Tracey Ullman's "Move Over Darling"?
It was put in this chart as 164 with sales of 144,000
But in the list above it's now at 141 with sales of 173,000

Really enjoyed this list. Turns out I already had 169 of the 200 in my iTunes and it's made an awesome playlist.

Irene Cara is indeed a funny one, two massive global smashes and then - nothing. Her What A Feelin' album is one of the first I ever bought as a kid and only had it on cassette. I was chuffed to recently discover it was on iTunes and it has stood the test of time remarkably well, such a great voice and so many good songs. I would strongly recommend it to any fan of 80s pop!

  18. #918
A slightly odd top 3; funny how even though The Power Of Love was so huge, I can't recall hearing it *that* much at the time, possibly not even as often as other #1s around that period. It didn't feel especially ubiquitous, but then again it wasn't quite my thing as a 14-year old. I was into a-ha, Starship, ZZ Top, Blancmange and Madness while she was at #1.

I'd quite like that Irene Cara album, so I'll see if amazon have it. I don't like to use the iTunes store.

This is true. It was HAMMERED on local radio in Liverpool long before it became a hit. That kind of thing would never happen now, but somehow being such a success locally spread word of mouth all over the country until it became a hit. We suffered the thing for what felt like an eternity.
