Charles Philip Arthur George is Prince Charles' full name. Diana Ross has already had her biggest, hasn't she? And there's no Camilla who had a huge single, is there?

Well there's my lack of knowledge on the Royal Family laid bare!

Right, so someone touched by the Prince of Wales. In the 80s. So, not Geri Halliwell, haha.

The Prince of Wales? Well, Bonnie Tyler is Welsh... have we had Total Eclipse yet?

    11. I Feel For You by CHAKA KHAN

    Year 1984
UK peak #1 for 3 weeks
    Sales 664,000

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XV5_WagxZg

This total choon of a song was written and performed originally by Prince and then covered by Chaka Khan to give her the biggest UK hit of her career. Also features harmonica by Stevie Wonder. I can forgive her all the songs she's messed up over he years by forgetting words (The Winner Takes It All London 2009) and by abusing cocaine, just for bringing this gem into my life.

The feeling I get when I hear this song is what pop music is all about.

Fantastic song! So pleased it sold so well!

  8. #858
I Feel For You is, quite simply, fucking brilliant. The production is incredible, Chaka's on fire, and the whole thing is topped off by Stevie Wonder's harmonica. It is indeed pure pop perfection. And thankfully, in 1984, perfect pop records got to #1 and not #188 because it was only a buzz download promo release.

So, I shall start the top 10 tomorrow- any ideas as to what and whom is in there?

  10. #860
    Yes please!

The songs I think must be in there are:
"Like a Virgin" and "Into the Groove" - Madonna
"Total Eclipse of the Heart" - Bonnie Tyler
"The Power of Love" - Jennifer Rush

Can't think of any others right now though.

Unsure if Yazz's "The Only Way Is Up" will be in there as it's probably discounted due to it being Yazz & the Plastic Population, but who knows.

    10. I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) by WHITNEY HOUSTON

    Year 1987
UK peak #1 for 2 weeks
    Sales 667,000

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdUvfojP7-w

This is Whitney's biggest 80s hit in the UK. Written by the same team who gave her How Will I Know (which in my opinion is the better song), this launched her second album Whitney. Boy Meets Girl who wrote this track also offered her Waiting For A Star To Fall which she turned down but they went onto have a hit with it in 1989.

This is also apparantly the first Uk number 1 to include sales of the CD single. I didn't realise CD singles were out that early- or maybe they just didn't sell them that early in my skanky town.

  12. #862
A classic naturally. Though I also like How Will I Know more.

What about Olivia Newton-John? Wasn't Magic huge, or was that only in the US?

The next song will probably cause a few raised eyebrows. I'll reveal tomorrow

  15. #865
One of the best! I like it more than How Will I Know.

Magic was only a big hit in the U.S.

    Love that song!

    All of this^^^

A record of utter perfection with the greatest opening line of any record in recorded history.

Chaka, Prince, Stevie, Melle Mel and Arif Mardin. AMAZUAL!!!

    9. Together We Are Beautiful by FERN KINNEY

    Year 1980
UK peak #1 for 1 week
    Sales 672,000

Yes, I bet many of you had forgotten about this. A true one hit wonder, this made number 1 in the February of 1980, before being knocked off by The Jam. I have to confess that I like this, even if it is a bit sickly sweet. Any of you not know this? There were a couple of posters on Haven who didn't.

  19. #869
I have never heard this song before in my entire life.

I was one of the many Haven posters who had never heard of this song nor even noticed its inclusion in any previous list of best selling singles.

In my defence it's utterly forgettable and I was barely even born at the time.

  22. #872
Vaguely remember it. Surprised it's so high on the chart. Will you be able to list all the songs in the chart when we get to the end. I want to try and get all the songs I don't have and make a playlist. Thanks!

    8. The Only Way Is Up by YAZZ

    Year 1988
UK peak #1 for 5 weeks
    Sales 704,000

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtKAD...eature=related

This is a contentious entry. Credited to Yazz and the plastic population- who didn't even exist, hence why this gets to be included. I never knew that this was a cover version until Gezza's thread on Haven. Originally recorded by soul singer Otis Clay in 1980, but never a UK hit.

This is the biggest female sung hit of 1988, even keeping Kylie in 2nd place.

  24. #874
So The Plastic Population was like the 80's version of The Machine or The Diamonds, basically?

I'm stunned at never having heard so many of these!

I haven't heard this one either though it's actually pretty good!
