I think it was someone from BoxOfficeMojo on a podcast I listened to yesterday who predicted it could potentially reach $80 million on its opening weekend.
You go, Jennifer Lawrence, you go.

I just hope the film is actually good, because the first book is so brilliant and deserves the best acting, direction and scripting possible. It could really shine as a film.

There. I always hoped Katniss would die at some random point.Originally Posted by Someboy

People seem to actually know about this. I brought it up in class today (during the break obviously) and several people said 'yeah I heard about that!'. No idea how, but it seems the hype train is already in motion. Let's pray for a $MA$H!
Because if Katniss dies, the only logical thing to happen would be for the two guys to shack up!Originally Posted by JakeMagnus
The marketing has been brilliant. From the first trailer, which ended on a really exciting note, to the placement of commercials during the Superbowl and the Oscars, it's all come together really nicely. Plus, you know they'll send Jennifer, Josh, and maybe even Liam through the talk show ringer. Who knows, they might even send out Woody to appeal to the older demo. Suzanne Collins wrote a big endorsement of the film on its Facebook page too, which is nice for the fanbo, er, fangirls.Originally Posted by Rmx

Finished reading all of the books now. OH MY AM I EXCITED. I can see why people think it it dips in quality, but I just love the books SO much.
Only like 2 weeks left now?

Yep 2 weeks and 2 days for the UK! Just 2 weeks for me, so exciting!
Really don't like Woody Harrelson as Haymitch. I always pictured him looking a bit wilder, sort of like a younger version of Du Plessis from Wild At Heart. Haha.
One of the trailers (not sure which) is absolutely dreadful. I really hope they haven't Twilighted this up.
I had a 20 minute argument with one of my friends because of who they cast for Rue. For some reason I always pictured her as really pale with long flowing red hair. She pictured her almost exactly as they cast her in the movie. Oh well.
Back from the dead.
I pictured her exactly the same way! Kind of wild and rebellious, but still quite innocent.Originally Posted by catcloneflowncondo
I didn't picture Rue as black but I have a bad habit of ignoring descriptions and picturing characters how I want them to look. I did imagine Thresh as black though and I got the feeling from the way it's described that District 11 is largely populated by African Americans so it makes sense that Rue is African American. According to the author, they cast her as she was supposed to look in the book.Originally Posted by catcloneflowncondo
Ooh ew I didn't know that. I hated him on Will & Grace, I hope he doesn't seem so dumb in this film. I pictured him as a very intelligent, brave guy. But then again he was sort of an 'extreme' character on Will & Grace, if he just loses that awful Southern accent I bet he's already tons better.Originally Posted by Tribal Spaceman
Just read the first book which was very well plotted but quite badly written.
I know it was aimed at 'young adults', something I haven't been for 20 years but read like was aimed at 8 year olds.
Anyway just wondered if there are spoilers for books 2 and 3 in this thread before I delve in???
Check you lipstick before you come and talk to me.............. Let's go Zi Lin!!!
Yeah parts of it were very clunky and basically just pages and pages of exposition but the overall story is solid and most of the characters are well-rounded.
I think there are, but you should be able to finish book 2 and 3 in a week or so anyway.Originally Posted by Baby Clyde
I am quite looking forward to this. I enjoyed the first book a lot. The second one was OK and the third was literally awful, it was a chore to get through it and I only finished as I felt invested and wanted to know what happened in the end.
Still can't believe that Prim died, what a waste of Katniss' time going into the arena was to start with
Jennifer Lawrence is far too pretty to be Katniss who I always pictured as average verging on rough looking, who scrubs up fairly well when they dress her up and put make up on her. This is Emma Watson all over again. I think Peeta and Gale are well cast though. Effie is PERFECT and Haymitch is nothing like I imagined.
I can imagine the film being better than the book and I hope I am proved right!
I'd pictured Haymitch with black hair and all beard-y. (Basically like this one man working at my university) Woody in a wig wasn't what I was expecting.Originally Posted by cherry20
Also, I too somehow missed that Rue was black. In my head she looked like Disney Channel actress Allisyn Ashley Arm.
Can we keep the book 2 and 3 spoilers out of this thread from now on please? I came here to discuss the film (this is the Movies section after all) and now I know key plot points of a book I haven't read yet, which is bloody annoying.
Also, once the film comes out people will want to talk about it freely and they might not want to know what's going to happen in the rest of the series.
Spanks.
I should be able to finish book 2 and 3 in the same afternoon. They're basically 150 pages long but really wide spacing boosts them to 250.Originally Posted by Rmx

You see I thought the exact opposite. The characters were completely underwritten. Other than Kat and to a lesser extent Peeta everyone was entirely one dimensional. Many of them just had names and no characteristics or descriptions at all.Originally Posted by Tribal Spaceman
It's also going to be extremely hard to adapt to the screen as so much of the plot and back story is explained in Kat's head. There is really good film to be made in there somewhere and I'm really interested to see what they do with it.
They've certainly got off to a good start as the trailers look great and the casting is more or less perfect. Lennie Kravits is an especially nice touch and it great to see some 'texture' has been added to the cast with Amandla Stenberg and Dayo Okineyi (Something you never would have expected from the books).
Elisabeth Banks and Stanley Tucci and great choices but both look ridiculous.
From one passage in the book and one particular casting decision I'm guessing there is quite a shocker on it's way which would be amazing but I kinda hope I'm wrong about.
Shall report back at the end of the week when I've finished the other books.

I'm starting on the two as well, Baby Clyde.
(For the record, I pictured Rue as of Hispanic or Latina descent!)
The capital 'E' means I'm 'bout that life.
That's what I mean.
I thought she was blonde and blue eyed.
You thought she was Latina.
And they've cast a black girl.
Surely this kind of thing should have been made clear in the book.
I almost want her to write an adult version for teenagers who don't need to be patronised.
In a world of Harry Potter and His Dark Materials this just doesn't compare.

No, sorry. It says 'trilogy' and 'book spoilers'. It's not as if there's that much to discuss about a single film. Just take two hours out of your day and read the remaining books.Originally Posted by Tribal Spaceman

Having said that I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be starting book 2 tomorrow.
