The story was the smaller problem. The writing was the horrible thing about it. It's as if she (the author) was in way over her head for that scale of story. I thought it was very rushed, childish and just plain bad. I think I stopped halfway through book three.

But maybe it was just me, since a lot of people seem to still like book three. To each their own etc. I guess...

I can see what you mean. I personally like book three, but the thing is that the series is called 'The Hunger Games' and that's exactly what it's about: the games! This is why book one will always be the best of the three in my eyes, because it's purely about the games.

*book 2 and 3 spoiler alert*

Of course there was the Quarter Quell in book two, but the pods on the capitol in book 3 seemed like a forced attempt to create a third 'hunger games' just for the sake of it. It's almost like she didn't really know how to finish things after the Games were finished. I still really enjoyed it, though!

I had this (looking back now) weird idea as I was getting close to the end of book one that some twist would be pulled where Kat would be forced to participate again for the next two books, because that's where the story really excelled. Honestly, it was such a page turner from the moment the actual games start, and every time it slowed down even the slightest I was practically skimming (in a good way!) so I could get to the end faster.

Everything I've seen from the film so far suggests it's going to be great. I really hope so. Jennifer Lawrence is such a star.
    Meet your new stepmom, kid.

I just hope the love story isn't sold on the Twilight level ("Team Edward!" "Team Jacob!"), because whilst it is a part of the story (especially in the first book) more than anything to Katniss, it's incidental.

Last book is a letdown but still the trilogy is great and i hope movies will be as good or even better.

Shallow, but Peeta looks so hot in the trailer. I'm totally on team Peeta. Oh God, imagine Peeta and Gale together? Sorry Katniss but you're dismissed.

Peeta and Gale are a cute pair indeed. Katniss acts like a lesbian anyway.

When I read the books I pictured very different people from whom they've ended up casting. Granted, I tend to somehow skip over physical descriptions of characters and stick to how I envision them in my head, but still...they better make up for it with Finnick.

  9. #34
I think they've done the casting very well. Especially Peeta and Effie are spot-on. I imagined both Gale and Katniss to look a bit more... dangerous, though. Especially Katniss, she's supposed to be a tough survivalist slash occasional killer slash face of the rebellion, yet she looks like a sweet little girl. I'm sure she'll be brilliant though, can't wait for the film!

Oh, Finnick... I wish I could do the casting, I'd totally pick someone hot and beefed up. I developed a small crush on him while reading the books to be honest!

I can't believe some people find books 2 & 3 disappointing! I had to almost speed read all 3 because I was dying to find out how it all ended. Totally thrilling from start to finish!

Book 1 was good all the way through. Book 2 was only good during the middle to end, during the games (but WOW was that 75th HG amazing or what?) and book 3 was good from the beginning to middle, then it lost steam. The whole plotline with Peeta was annoying at times. Book 3 also lacks the imagination the first two have, but makes up for it with the 'All yo faves be dyin' attitude, so the thrill of anything can happen was fun.
Darling, I came here for you, and no you're not about to go until I fuck with you.

Of the three books, this is the one part I'm looking forward to the most.

Never read any of the books, but I am completely stoked for this film.

Ready to ride the hype train.
I'm about to drown in the ocean.

Catching Fire completely lost the plot after Katniss went back into the arena, which is a shame because it was fairly good before that. Shoddy, shoddy writing. Half the time I didn't know where the characters were, what they were doing and who was even there.

Sometimes it was a bit hard for me to imagine the geography of the Quarter Quell:

    1. Where was the water in the clock arena? I thought it was a round arena with some sort of pool / lake in the middle, and the edges of the arena were a force field. However, they keep describing them being on 'the beach', which sort of implies there's an ocean at the edge of the arena, or do they just mean the area around the central lake?

    2. Where was the force field? Like I said, I thought it was around the arena, but the way they keep on dodging force fields left and right makes it seem like they're all over the place. Also, this ties to my question of what exactly is the edge of the arena.

I wish she'd drawn a map, haha! Fantasy novel style.

  16. #41
I think they were all concentric circles. The smallest circle is the island in the middle, then the next one is the water around it, then the next one is the jungle with the final circle being the forcefield serving as a border for the arena.

Therefor you would have beaches on both sides of the water, on one side on the island in the middle, on the other side where the jungle starts.

If I remember correctly at one point they were actually walking alongside the forcefield, so perhaps that's where you got confused?

Oh, hang on, I just found this, here's your map, haha!

Yeah see, that's how I pictured it but it was just a bit confusing to me they called it a 'beach', it sort of implies an ocean, not a lake. I guess that's also why the force fields confused me, since I just wasn't sure if the edge of the arena was a beach or not. Thanks for that though!

Less than a month away guys! Sort of considering re-reading the books since I went through them so fast (like, 2 weeks), but that was only a few weeks ago so maybe I'll just keep myself wanting it and then bam, the movie's there!

  21. #46
Has someone made "The Hungry Gays" yet? Surely it's only a matter of time...

The promo push has already begun with TV spots, etc. The film's riding on a shed-load of hype, let's hope it can live up to it?!
