I find it annoying that she's basically shitting on American culture, as if she's above it. If more than ten people actually knew who she was you know she'd sell out as quick as any of these other 'prima donnas.' The music is fucking amazing, however.

You got it totally wrong. She fucking loves American culture.

I think it's probably the other way around, which is why she says American culture fascinates her as much as it does. She admires the kind of audacity and ruthlessness people in the States have in order to reach this kind of "perfection" or "goal" - be it being successful or famous. No matter how much the American Dream changes, we're still determined, as people, to get to it.

And that is how you completely miss a point.

She's admitting that she WANTS to be famous, and she wants to be successful and if she needs to be a blonde and work with go-to producers to achiever that SHE WILL.
There's one interview where she basically admits that The Archetypes are her "excuse" to do this.

This does not make sense. If she wants to be successful then why did she write a song about how she is 'sad to the core' and trying to 'fill the void' in her life? Clearly she is being ironic about this and her press interviews and if she isn't then you're essentially supporting a sociopath with a very caustic and unhealthy outlook on life.

So you're all telling me that none of this is supposed to be tongue in cheek? Right.

Okay well can you explain it to me, then? Because I clearly don't understand the meta that is Marina.

Of course it's tongue-in-cheek, but it's more the I-know-I-am-wrong-but-I-can't-help-that-i'm-ambitious-so-i'm-just-going-to-make-a-quite-good-pop-song-about-it kind of irony than i'm-going-to-criticize-fame-whores-by-basing-a-character-on-them kind of irony.

  15. #15
    Exactly.

Why can't she be dead serious about being fame-hungry and still have fun at the same time? It worked for Madonna. It worked for Gaga.

So she's insecure, then? If she's working to make a hit record then she should just drop this whole pretense of art and deeper underlying emotion because it's essentially one big lie anyway.

Because Madonna and Gaga weren't trying to display some kind ofironic criticism toward fame in their music.

I think it's clear Marina has a bit of an odd mind. Part of the charm of her debut were her songs about dealing with anxiety and depression. I think she is still trying to figure her views on life out. Her rants on feminism partially show that.

Gaga - "My album is titled The Fame, but it's not about celebrity culture. I hate celebrity culture. It's about inner fame and confidence. To me, celebrity is ugly."

Hell, I would say, besides Marina, Gaga is the only current popstar who "gets" fame and celebrity and media.

Gaga believes every word she is singing, and if not then she is probably the world's most amazing actor.

The funny thing about 'Prima Donna' is I think the lyrics are 100% serious and autobiographical. It doesn't take a genius to see the correlation between this 'character' and everything Marina represented ('Are You Satisfied', 'Numb', etc) in The Family Jewels.
What a lovely way to burn.

Does she say something about avoiding the Noid in the second verse? I REALLY HOPE SHE DOES.

Take a picture, I'm with the boys

I still think that after Chandelier Chorus it should be all uptempo - Carwash Chorus really should be where the song becomes a proper banger - but this has grown on me massively.

And, for the record, it sounds way better when I can feel the left side of my face.

I'm going to pretend she sings about avoiding the Noid anyway.
