I thought the 'Shine' album was one of their best. 'Heart and Soul' is up there too. The 'Five Star' and 'Eclipse' albums were patchy. I still love 'Treat Me Like A Lady' though!

'Problematic' has randomly just appeared to buy online:

Five Star online releases in recent years have been truly bizarre.

iTunes has a load of singles bundles for Five Star songs I've never heard of with old 80s artwork but the songs are obviously later releases.

They might make a bob or two out of doing the Kylie/Jason/PWL iTunes thing of doing proper 80s single bundles but when have they ever done anything sensible that is likely to make them some money?

Anyway I REALLY want reissues of "Between The Lines" and "Rock The World" even if the artwork is as crappy as the first two.

And on iTunes there's a song called "It". I've never even heard of it (ho ho).

So it seems that It is a song that never made it to the Heart & Soul album... I wonder if there will be any other unreleased songs put up?

  6. #156
I want some proper unreleased 80s songs. Not sure if any would really exist though?

I know this is slightly OT but I once read somewhere that there was a video made for "Somewhere Somebody" complete with spangly suits but it was shelved and they chose to have the live video instead. I have searched online for this mythical video ever since. I feel it may have been a cruel joke.....

I listend to the Shine album for the first time last night and was surprised as to how good it was! Such a shame it vanished without a trace.

I've just noticed how much of their post-Greatest hits output is available online. From what I've heard, it all sounds a bit bland 90s r'n'b. The cover of 'heart and soul' is the lamest cover I've ever seen, (yes, even worse than 'the sound of Girls Aloud'). Am amazed they had so much released, as I don't think any of these albums charted in the UK, so who was their audience? The US? Europe?

  10. #160
I don't suppose there's any chance of the 1989 Greatest Hits being remastered?

Problematic's a bit shit, innit! I can see why it wasn't included on the amazing album that is Luxury of Life. I never imagined it'd be a social issue song!

Is Luxury of Life considered a good album then? I got the reissue last year and thought it was really disappointing. Before that I'd only had a Five Star greatest hits. I think Silk and Steel's a great album though and hope their other two 80s albums get reissued.

And yes, going by that clip Problematic is terrible!

Luxury of Life is probably not considerd a good album by many, but it's a childhood fave for me so I love it! I generally love that funky synth pop stuff from around 83-85. All Fall Down is one of my favourite songs ever.

Maybe if I'd had it as a child I'd have liked it better! A lot of my favourites probably aren't classed as "good albums" but I still love Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, Taylor Dayne and Martika, probably due to nostalgia reasons.

I just found Silk and Steel a much stronger album and features their best run of singles too (The Slightest Touch, Rain Or Shine, Stay Out Of My Life, If I Say Yes and Can't Wait Another Minute are all amazing) whereas I only liked System Addict from Luxury of Life. Maybe I should give it another try!

Luxury of Life (good job I adhere to the rules and don't abbreviate albums to initials or that'd be el oh el and get auto-corrected to summat else) had loads of singles but not many hits. Aside from the brilliant All Fall Down and System Addict, I love Love Take Over, Hide and Seek, Now I'm In Control, Crazy and Winning. Let Me Be The One and RSVP are ok but not brilliant. Say Goodbye is very cheesy. I've only listened once or twice to the bonus track that was on the reissue so I can't comment on that one. It's not as good an album as Silk & Steel but it's still worth another listen. Deneice sounds quite helium voiced on it in compariosn to later stuff though.

5 star came on the back of the whole 'bunch of black UK kids hitting the charts' and in that they were a kind of post-Musical Youth. 'Problematic' was VERY 'trying to be Musical youth'. Their first album though was actually very slick soul pop in the same vein as the likes of Loose Ends, but sung by a gang of teenagers. Which is probably why they took some time to take off. Once they released an out and out pop song 'System addict' (the 7th!!! single from 'luxury of life') they finally gave the pop crowd what they wanted. 'Silk and steel' consolidated this BIG time, but they failed to consolidate that success at all.

'Luxury of life' reminds me of warm school holidays as I think it came out mid-summer. I actually think the early stuff has aged the best as it wasn't trying to be 'the current sound', it was kind of timeless r'n'b stuff. All the synths and slap-bass on 'Silk and steel' date it, although there are some crackers on there. I wish they could have found a way to have developed their music, but when the likes of Janet starting having hits they looked decidedly lightweight in comparison.

^ Sir, you just nailed it.

I prefer the first album's sound..well, technically the sound of their run of singles from All Fall Down through to Find The Time, which trailed Silk & Steel. The rest of the 2nd album, I didn't much care for; they lost me after Rain Or Shine and most of that LP is missing the funky, Loose Ends brit-funk/soul vibe. Slightest Touch pulled things back a bit, thanks to the remix, but it was a bit late to repair all the damage stylistically.

Can't Wait Another Minute is still sensationally good.If a Jackson had done it, people would claim it's genius. Instead it's all but forgotten.

After a few more listens Problematic's grown on me. I was expecting something like All Fall Down or System Addict when I first heard it so felt disappointed when it turned out to be nothing like that, but it's quite a catchy little ditty really.

For me - it's all about Rock The World & With Every Heartbeat - my all time fave Five Star song!
