California King Bed was originally one of my favorites, but by mid-summer I was prepared to delete it from my iTunes. A lot of her single ballads don't seem to hold up well with me over time. I can't stand Hate That I Love You or Take a Bow anymore. Unfaithful, Rehab and Russian Roulette are the only three I still enjoy.

interesting fact, when Talk That Talk (the album) was in its first days of creation, vice president of Def Jam said they wanted to make an album full of potential hits..

They got what they wanted, didn't they? We Found Love, Where Have You Been, Birthday Cake, Cockiness etc. All fun songs. But I don't think I ever listened to the whole album in one go after the first time I heard it, only listened to a couple of songs then went off to listen to something else.

    That was actually Loud.

    And he was right.

  6. #4581
Yeah, I see the potential hits!

Everything from You Da One (TRUST me, it would have done perfectly fine as a 5th/6th single) through to Birthday Cake is a single, then there's Roc Me Out as well as Farewell which would make a great era ender.

I've been saying it from the beginning, but We Found Love followed by Where Have You Been should have been how it went. Talk That Talk as a single when the album drops in order to show her versatility, Birthday Cake (NOT with Fist Brown, I'd go with Drake), You Da One and then Farewell. A perfect era.
Yeah because Lady Gaga is the only pop star of this generation to have an iconic anthematic song. California Gurls says hi. *Eye roll*

the album IS full of hits if handled properly. We Found Love then Where Have You Been then Birthday Cake with CHRISTINA AGUILERA, then Roc Me Out then Talk That Talk / You Da One (US / UK respectively) and end the era with Drunk On Love... PERFECTO

I think her self-destructive behavior will catch up with her one day.

Awful to say, but the album that will come forward out of that period will be AMAZING.

Hope it'll be rather sooner than later.

She has an ear for hits, but not necessarily for great music.

You Da One and Watch n' Learn are great for slithering up and down your kitchen as you make breakfast.

Just messing around on my iPod there and made a playlist for a "dark" Rihanna album, yet still highly commercial tell me what ye think:
    1 Mad House
    2 Wait Your Turn
    3 Disturbia
    4 Breakin' Dishes
    5 Man Down
    6 Russian Roulette
    7 Fire Bomb
    8 Rehab
    9 Photographs
    10 Where Have You Been
    11 We Found Love
    12 Take A Bow
    13 Cold Case Love
    14 Drink On Love

I know the majority of people here would probably remove Photographs but I like it! Also Man Down may initially seem out of place but between Breakin Dishes and Russian Roulette it definitely fits, thematically. Imagine how successful that could be. Buzz single Wait Your Turn, first single Russian Roulette, album lead up We Found Love. Then Disturbia, Where Have You Been, Rehab & Take a Bow. SMA$H.

So Rihanna showed up on stage at Watch the Throne tonight... thought for a second it was a stand in singer, then the video showed her up close. Amazing.

Is she going to be on the new M.I.A album then? She posted a picture of them together on twitter.

Despite the fact that Rihanna's collaborating cooch is looser than other artists, the idea of M.I.A. and Rihanna doing a track together kind of excites me.

I'd rather have M.I.A. working with Rihanna than with Chris Brown, as rumours said.
Imagine if both features turn out to be true.

OMG, she is looking awful at the moment, shes has shaved both sides of her hair and has the mushroom fringe and a mullet, probably her worst look!

Eh, I'm not too keen on it, but honestly #yolo

Just kidding...I hope she saves it, it was so beautiful at Coachella.

Out of all the major female pop stars at the moment, Rihanna has simultaneously got the easiest and most difficult next move:
    Just make better music. Simple!

Actually, I'll rephrase that. I didn't actually mind 'Talk That Talk', but she needs to make something that has some form of a lasting legacy. I'm not suggesting that she goes quite as far as a Beyoncé-style '4' take on things, but just something with a decent bit of thought and depth put into it.

If Def Jam are incessant on keeping her in the limelight, stick out a 'Greatest Hits' with a couple of new tracks later this year, and then put out something fresh and new, deep into 2013.

Thank you. I'm currently in the middle of a stan phase for Rihanna, but I'd like her next album to be as you said; leaning toward Rated R rather than LOUD, even if it doesn't try to replicate the former. Just a bit more substance, please.
    Janet.

I loved Talk That Talk, but I do agree we need to see things switched up for the next album. We've been playing with the same themes since Rude Boy, and whilst We Found Love pushed the dance door ajar, in reality it was just a Calvin Harris masterclass in hit-making and nothing more.

I wouldn't be upset if she did a rock album.

I was talking to people on Twitter about Rated R; it really seemed to have turned many of the then-casual listeners of Rih into actual fans, and in some cases, 'stans'. I think we all hold onto her and almost excuse some of the missteps of her career since she gave us such a beautifully crafted and visually stimulating era. I only wish that she chooses to return to the strength of work she had during that time.

I think a Greatest Hits would be the best move at this point. This last era seems to have lost some of her steam as she felt so powerful during LOUD. A GH would remind the public of her many hit she's collected in such a short amount of time while also giving her a chance to take a break for herself, as I imagine GH are a lot easier to promote.

It sounds weird to say because she is as popular as you can get but Rihanna really does need that crossover album or moment, at least in America. Hit singles can only take you so far... but who knows, in this digital music landscape which we are currently in it might not even be necessary. She at least needs a signature performance, not just "that was a good performance... for Rihanna" type praise she gets.

  24. #4599
Well, she's on Idol tonight so maybe it's her chance...

I still think the We Found Love performances she did were brilliant. Couldn't care less that she sang over a backing track; I just never expected the euphoria of the song to be so well-showcased on stage.
