This is, embarrassingly, by far my favourite movie-genre.
If there's no lovestory in a movie it leaves me cold (absolutely no exception), and a bit of comedy justifies seeing it more than once.
The genre is incredibly hit&miss though...

Good
Bridget Jones Diary (1&2)
These are quite lovely. I can't stand Hugh Grant, but Colin Firth quite makes up for that.
For me there was bit too much comedy that distracted from the 'love'-part though, especially in part 2. And a tropical island is not a good location for a romantic movie, which should always be set in either spring or winter(!!!).

Down With Love
Only just decent enough to not fall in the 'bad'-category. Both main characters aren't remotely likeable, and the plot is ridiculous, but the styling makes up for it.

Serendipity
Last time I watched it I didn't love it as much as the first time I saw it.
Probably because the story's quite nice and at first watch really makes you wonder what's gonna happen next, but once you know that already, there's not that much left.
Still loved it the first time, it's like a modern fairytale.

Just Like Heaven
It made me cry. That's a good thing.
Reese Witherspoon's in it. Also good.
I didn't care for the leading man, but the movie was both entertaining and touching, so it did it's job.

Love Actually
It's cute & it's christmassy.
The trouble with so many storylines is you don't really get into all characters, but it is a nice feelgood-movie anyway. Once again, too much Hugh, and Colin had the cutest storyline.

50 First Dates
I demand a remake without Rob Schneider and his sidekick.
The humour in this 'comedy' is cringeworthy. The lovestory between Drew and Adam is lovely and original though, and I did shed a tear when they showed her the video about her life.. Still the movie makes for a painful watch because of f*cking Rob.

BAD

The Wedding Date
Biggest mess I've ever seen. I didn't care for the main characters, there was no chemistry, and the plot was just plain bad and messy.

Must Love Dogs
I bought this (for about 1 pound) after liking John Cusack in Serendipity.
What a dissapointment. Terribly predictable, a complete lack of humour, and once again no chemistry at all.

Brilliant
My Best Friend's Wedding
I think I've seen this one at least 10 times now, and it remains my favourite movie ever.
What's so good about it?
- Julia Roberts is brilliant being incredibly likeable and a total bitch at the same time.
She is and does everything a female lead in these kind of movies never does: she's selfish, childish, manipulative, she even smokes..
- Because both female leads are likeable the story is rather unpredictable, because you really can't figure out what the happy ending to this story should be.
- 'I have to be jello!'
- You can't go wrong with Burt Bacharach-songs.
The only thing that could have been better is the male lead. He's hardly ugly, but not extremely charming either, and his personality is kind of flat, there's hardly any moments that make you see what exactly is so great about this guy..

LOVE ACTUALLY IS BRILLIANT, NOT GOOD.

That is all.
I'm a good girl but I can be bad.

Over the past week i keep seeing Hugh Grant on TV, like a magnet. But i do love 'Love Actually', 'Bridget Jones' Diary' and 'Notting Hill'. Hugh Grant was at his best in Notting Hill, i feel.

Actually, it's Richard Curtis i should be singing praises about, he's brilliant.

I have a rather large soft spot for The Holiday, although that may be due to Jude Law's involvement.

My Best Friend's Wedding is definitely brilliant.
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?

O, I forgot to mention that one..
I'm sorry to say it would end on my 'bad'-list.
It started of promising, I immediately loved Kate's character, but Jude's character was like a Ken-doll (fine-looking but a complete lack of personality), and the way Kate ended up with Jack Black was ridiculous.. they just were together, out of nowhere...
Cameron & Kate were lovely, I just wish the story could have been a bit stronger.

O yes! I Wanna Grow Old With You is lovely...

Re: Kate Hudson, I also hated How To Lose A Man In 10 Days, I thought both she and Matthew weren't likeable mains, and because of that anything else left me completely cold.. The plot was okay-ish, but they didn't pull it of.

Fixed. (I like 'Love Actually' too though. And 'Wimbledon'. Which I mention because ITV2 has been playing both lately.)

ITV2 does love to play it's rom-com's quite a lot. I like this.

In general I hate romcoms, as they so frequently leave out the "com" part. They are churned out by hollywood by the bucketload and always seem to star the insipid Matthew Maconoghey (sp?) and the drippy Kate Hudson.

Major exception to this rule is When Harry Met Sally. Hilariously funny and the romantic element is so so so sweet! Highly recommend that movie every time.

Brilliant - Notting Hill, Pretty Woman.
My all time favourites.

My all time favourites...........

Notting Hill
Four Weddings And A funeral
Bridget Jones diary
The Wedding Singer
Never Been Kissed
Shes All That
While You Were Sleeping

I also quite liked Failure To Launch with Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew mcConnaughey although it wouldnt be one of my all time faves. Does As Good As It Gets count as a romcom

End of discussion.
"Sometimes I hate myself for wanting you, but then you only have to say you love me to make it worth it..."

Love Actually is the best romantic comedy of all time and my favorite movie.

Also brilliant is As Good as it Gets with Helen Hunt, About a Boy, Down with Love (I really love that one) AND My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

The first Bridget Jones was great, I love it and need to watch it again soon, the second not so good for me.

There once was a woman from Ealing,
She had a peculiar feeling,
She lay on her back,
Opened her crack
And pissed all over the ceiling.

- Hugh Grant

I found myself loving Failure To Launch, despite Matthew What's-his-face.
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?

I'm going to get shot down for this but I hated Love Actually, I just didn't really like the idea of it playing out like a soap cutting between the stories and that end bit at the airport with the children is the biggest pile of shit ever.

Good examples of romantic comedies come from 4 Weddings and for me Maid In Manhattan is perfect.

Notting Hill - the best. Full stop.

Bridget Jones coming a close 2nd.

I'd like to like it, but I have an aversion to Meg Ryan. I can barely take her in InnerSpace, and that's one of my favourite movies. Sadly this also limits my enjoyment of When Harry Met Sally too. There's something about her acting I just find very false.
Movies > Music > Muses. Got a problem?

I liked You've Got Mail and Bridget both good examples of a classic romcom.

Amen Sista!

I also have to confess my love of 'You've Got Mail', it's brilliant. 'Addicted To Love' with Meg is excellent too.

Also, to whomever said 'While You Were Sleeping' you read my mind! There's a brilliant gay comedy called 'Adam & Steve' that was amazing, really worth checking out if anyone else is a fan of gay cinema. 'Love Actually' and 'Bridget Jones' are my absolute favourites but I love 'The Holiday' too. 'Something's Gotta Give' is fantastic as well, actually I need to dig that out and watch it again!
'Donna Summer told me the Lord should wash my mouth out with soap. Donna Summer who sang Bad Girls!'

Adam and Steve is great! Doesn't it have Parker Posey in it?!

Speaking of gay cinema, it's less com and more rom, but I still love Latter Days with Steve Sandvoss. Oh the Sandvoss.

Yes it does have Parker Posey in it - I love her shit stand-up in the movie! I adore 'Latter Days' but didn't mention it because it's not at all com, as you said, that last moment where you know what happens and a tray is dropped gets me every time!

Worst ever romantic comedy...

The Family Stone

There can not be anything worse than this, so much so the thought of it sends me into a blinding rage. Sarah Jessica Parker being an uptight bitch (and not in the Sex and the City way), Diane Keaton being a pain up the arse mum (and not in a hysterical, oh isn't she crazy way). Claire Danes just being there, because they clearly scooped Claire Danes and didn't know what do with her.

I can handle plotholes, I can handle overwhelming schmaltz, I can even handle castmembers without any point in Romcoms it's all part of the joy. However, if I can't even be made to like the characters then the game is up, why do I care if people find love if I hate them?

To sum up the Family Stone, awful film.

Sarah you should be ashamed
Diane you should be ashamed
Claire you should be ashamed
Luke you should be ashamed

As for the rest well I suppose the gas bill needed paid... Gas is expensive these days!

I haven't actually watched very many, but I love Bridget Jones, especially the first one. It's probably my favourite film. But the ski-ing/possibly mit baby scene in the second one is genius.
I thought I had it but I tumbled...
