This is, embarrassingly, by far my favourite movie-genre.
If there's no lovestory in a movie it leaves me cold (absolutely no exception), and a bit of comedy justifies seeing it more than once.
The genre is incredibly hit&miss though...
Bridget Jones Diary (1&2)
These are quite lovely. I can't stand Hugh Grant, but Colin Firth quite makes up for that.
For me there was bit too much comedy that distracted from the 'love'-part though, especially in part 2. And a tropical island is not a good location for a romantic movie, which should always be set in either spring or winter(!!!).
Down With Love
Only just decent enough to not fall in the 'bad'-category. Both main characters aren't remotely likeable, and the plot is ridiculous, but the styling makes up for it.
Last time I watched it I didn't love it as much as the first time I saw it.
Probably because the story's quite nice and at first watch really makes you wonder what's gonna happen next, but once you know that already, there's not that much left.
Still loved it the first time, it's like a modern fairytale.
Just Like Heaven
It made me cry. That's a good thing.
Reese Witherspoon's in it. Also good.
I didn't care for the leading man, but the movie was both entertaining and touching, so it did it's job.
It's cute & it's christmassy.
The trouble with so many storylines is you don't really get into all characters, but it is a nice feelgood-movie anyway. Once again, too much Hugh, and Colin had the cutest storyline.
50 First Dates
I demand a remake without Rob Schneider and his sidekick.
The humour in this 'comedy' is cringeworthy. The lovestory between Drew and Adam is lovely and original though, and I did shed a tear when they showed her the video about her life.. Still the movie makes for a painful watch because of f*cking Rob.
The Wedding Date
Biggest mess I've ever seen. I didn't care for the main characters, there was no chemistry, and the plot was just plain bad and messy.
Must Love Dogs
I bought this (for about 1 pound) after liking John Cusack in Serendipity.
What a dissapointment. Terribly predictable, a complete lack of humour, and once again no chemistry at all.
My Best Friend's Wedding
I think I've seen this one at least 10 times now, and it remains my favourite movie ever.
What's so good about it?
- Julia Roberts is brilliant being incredibly likeable and a total bitch at the same time.
She is and does everything a female lead in these kind of movies never does: she's selfish, childish, manipulative, she even smokes..
- Because both female leads are likeable the story is rather unpredictable, because you really can't figure out what the happy ending to this story should be.
- 'I have to be jello!'
- You can't go wrong with Burt Bacharach-songs.
The only thing that could have been better is the male lead. He's hardly ugly, but not extremely charming either, and his personality is kind of flat, there's hardly any moments that make you see what exactly is so great about this guy..
