Thread: HMV

The prices of vinyl in HMV are a bit on the ridiculous side. I know new releases can be about 15-20 quid, maybe a bit more, but not 30 or 35. Not for a piece of plastic. There's premium product and then there's plain extortion!

The deluxe Elbow albums (2CD+DVD) are priced very stranglely in my local HMV store. One is £13, one is £16 and one is £23. They are all part of the same reissue programme with similar content, so... ?

Well as they've now aligned instore and online prices, potentially only one of them is "wrong" - Asleep In The Back should be £16, and Leaders Of The Free World and Cast Of Thousands are both £23 online.

(The latter are both £11.99 at Amazon)

Had my first Birmingham delivery from them. A pre-order but it wasn't posted until Friday, only arrived today and was sent in a plain old jiffy bag too. Boo!

Yes, the experience with HMV is certainly inconsistant since the changes. My pre-orders were sent Wednesday last week and I got 2 on Monday and one on Tuesday. That's longer than usual from them so I've gotten less support've of them recently. They've also switched from cardboard boxes to jiffy bags and their new barcode labels are now very difficult to peel off. So far, I've only had to remove them from shrinkwrapped items but if they plonk one one an unsealed pproduct and it leaves a mess, I'll sent it right back. The click & collect service is also rubbish, everything I select just says "Stock low - check in store", which of course means they don't have any copies at all. To be fair, none of these onlines retailers are able to satisfy me entirely, but HMV has a points scheme and has previously been very prompt with deliveries so they were winning. Now I'm shopping around a bit more.

I just Googled it and on some Blu-ray forum people aren't happy about the jiffy bags as slip cases and card sleeves are getting damaged. Apparently, customer services have said that the cardboard boxes will be back in the next couple of weeks. They must be shipping it all over from Guernsey.

There was no label stuck on mine, but that will be a deal breaker if they don't sort it out.

I'm glad I've been doing all my HMV shopping instore lately, then! I wouldn't be happy with all that.

Only just realised at the weekend that they've matched up their store and online prices..doh. That's bound to harm their sales, surely. Amazon and play are back to 5 quid cheaper on things again.

It's generally far more interesting again in their stores, but they need to be more careful with their stock - they somehow managed to smash all the Swing Out Sister reissue cases between last week and this! I suppose the staff just don't take enough care.

I tried the new trade in scheme HMV are currently doing. Took in a few old CDs and DVDs and got 50p in store credit for each. It's better than what Music Magpie and other sites give you. And to top it off, I got full refund on 2 DVDs I bought at full price years ago when they were first released but never got around to watching. Ended up with £24.50 in credit for 7 DVDs and 5 CDs!

They do this?! I thought even with a receipt you only had 30 days. Nice one.

Yeah, I use the trade-in/swap shop thing...it's less hassle than other places although they can be a bit picky, refusing some for various reasons.

HMV is coming back to Cambridge, in an even bigger location! Hoorah!

  12. #962
The HMV trade in scheme is okay, but having a Fopp nearby is handy as they give £1 per item!

Had an odd experience in HMV today. Wanted the Jimmy Sommerville 'Read My Lips' reissue. It was £9 on their site, so I expected it to be the same instore. But it wasn't, it was £11. Tsk. So I did a Click and Collect on my phone, and took the CD up to the till and said "I've saved you collecting." He just did a £2 discount when he put it through. Bizarre.

    Amazing.

Now you've highlighted that I realise it doesn't make sense, as it's the customer who is meant to do the collecting anyway. But you knew what I meant...

Haha, I just thought it was a great line! (And I have no idea how click+collect works anyway).

You order it online and then go and pick it up and pay for it instore - provided they have it in stock at your local, you can do it 2 hours after ordering, and they keep it for 48 hours. It's a vaguely pointless system - the only real use is to check whether your store has something in stock before you go. It's not like you can reserve pre-order items to get something limited edition, for instance, and you can't order something to be delivered to store if they don't have it in stock already.

I guess the only useful thing I've found is the situation above, where it was cheaper online than instore (though it shouldn't have been with their whole price alignment thing).

Click and Collect is really only a tool to highlight to internet users that the price you're about to pay online is mirrored in your local store, thus why wait 3-5 days when you can have it in 2 hours for the same price. It essentially re-directs users to their highstreet stores. I like the idea, in theory, but the one time I used it, they took ages to find the CD and it was a bit tatty. Of course, if the price isn't the same, that's a huge flaw right there. Still, it's nice they're trying these things.

There are often weird price variations in store, the same album or DVD with 2 different prices right next to each other in the same section. They obviously don't bother replacing some of the old price stickers when they refill the racks with differently priced stock.

  19. #969
Noteworthy (also mentioned in bargain thread), HMV are offering a free CD single immediately of Angels when you pre-order The XX's new album in store. I really like this approach... more of this! Anything to get a freebie (well, physical incentive).

The new guy taking over at HMV used to be boss of Jessops, so perhaps in future they'll be giving away free prints!

I must tell someone how pissed off I am with the delivery of my Roxy Music box set. It was dispatched on 02/08 and still has not arrived. More than 8 days to get from Birmingham to Gateshead? It's only a couple of hours drive!

    Olympics?

(Yes, I know they're in London about 200 miles away but any excuse will do!).

Well, it was dispatched an hour before SexMix and that came on Monday, so...

Oh yes, ha. I saw the box set today in an actual HMV. It's extremely heavy. And £6 more than I paid.
